Gretchen's Story
Life
Brooklyn, Scranton, Miami, Coconut Grove, Chicago, New Orleans, Stamford CT, Kentucky, California, Kentucky. From print journalist to married Mother of two, corporate world, back to college, theatre stage manager, macrobiotic practitioner, designer. Enjoy yoga/do-in/qi-gong/shiatsu, tennis, workouts, sailing, camping, reading, bridge, gardening, trying new things and places. From 2002-June 2008 in San Francisco East Bay. Macrobiotics (vegetarian, world peace) gave me a new lease on life in November 2002, and I'm studying to become a counselor. Google the George Ohsawa Macrobiotic Foundation, then Summer Camp, and head on out to Tahoe National Forest every July - revitalizing.
We moved back to Bowling Green, Kentucky, end of June 2008, and I worked for Western Kentucky University's International Program for six months begining in January 2009. Jobs are hard to come by in this economy, and most go to locals or their network of relatives and friends. I've gone back to volunteer work, occasional theatre work (essentially volunteer), working elections, and a job called Emergency Substitute Teacher (no teaching credentials, but 210+ college credits and more smarts than many of those credentialed, as eveidenced by the horrific spelling, grammar and output of teachers whose classrooms I inhabit). Not my favorite thing to do - I'd weed out kids who aren't in school to learn, starting in Junior HS, with the knowledge that they could always come back later when they got serious. I think the tail is wagging the dog in schools these days. Kids know that schools want that $180/day for their warm body, and they disrespectfully run riot over the system. What a world, what a world!
I actually finished my bachelor's at WKU, 38 years after starting at UF in 1963 as a journalist. I got a BFA in theatre in 2001, and I continue to enjoy stage managing (which I really loved all over the Sa...Expand for more
n Francisco Bay area and its over 300 theatre companies, also in Stamford, CT). I get job postings all the time - who knows, some day I may journey to a theatre near you for a six-week or so stint. Finally caught up with two people I've been missing for 30 years. Visited Marie Dence, still in Gainesville, and now retired. It's lovely how people's core never really changes.
I travel almost annually back to Connecticut and various other places to see forever friends, and my daughter Ashley and husband Brahim in Western Mass. Sometime after Thanksgiving there will be a first grandchild. Woo Hoo. Son Ian is due to relocate back to Stamford in the Fall, so we will have even more room for guests in our finally empty nest. Let me know if you get this way, we are in the phone book (I'm not great at checking Classmates.com or Facebook, but I am in both - too busy connecting in person in real time)
I look forward to our REUNION IN 2013 - how many of us will still be standing or sitting or at least still irreverently on the planet. At least at this age, most should have lost their vanity fear of gathering due to the difference between the way we looked back then to the way we all look now. Knock on wood, I'm in good mostly vegetarian health (that being said, just had outpatient spinal surgery for a ruptured disk July 5, 2011. It's tough being asked to lay low for 6 weeks - not my modus operandi. Oh well, we had temps in the 100's last week, so it's too hot to play tennis anyway. Anyone got a summer cabin in Maine or Alaska or the North Pole? I miss coastal Connecticut, and if we ever win a HUGE lottery we will go back (though many of our friends have left for less costly, especially in taxes, locales. One friend's taxes on about a 2300 sq ft split level home were $59,000/year - granted it was direct harbor front, but STILL. Our taxes on a 6600 sq ft here in BGKY are about $3000/yr).
