Norma's Story
HELLO! Actually, I did not graduate. I started El Monte High in 10th grade. I didn't know that I could have stayed back to graduate with the class of 1988. No one informed me that if I stayed on track and got all my credits, I would have been allowed to stay and graduate. Oh well, I moved on. I got my GED. After high school I worked a couple of fun jobs. I was a recreation leader for the city of Pico Rivera, then worked for two major department stores in the loss prevention department. Ten years after high school I returned to school, I went to Mt. SAC for the Alcohol and drug counselor certificate, I continued on and got my bachelors in human services and finally my masters in counseling (emphasis in marriage and family therapy). Not bad for someone who had to figure things out on her own.
I was a quiet, shy kid in high school. I kind of stayed under the radar. I didn't really hang out at the school for any events, didn't participate in any activities, belonged to any clubs, or played sports. Not because I didn't want to, I just didn't have the option. ried out for softball, basketball, and volleyball. I loved and still love sports. I had a few very good friends, they were like me. Not really part of any click or group. I wasn't a trouble maker but during my junior year, I felt that going to school was pointless because I would not have enough credits to graduate so, I stopped caring. I ditched a lot, got caught a lot, and ended up with 57 hours of detention. With all that detention I ended up in Saturday school for I don't know how many months, my experience in Saturday school reminded me of the movie "the breakfast club". Mr. Bauer only caught me once, lol!
I played sports after high school, partied my buns off in my early twenties, traveled a bit, had a few business ventures, and bought my first home at 34. I never had children, I think the reason for this is because I had been made responsible for babies and toddlers since the age of ten. I do love kids. I currently work with severely emotionally disturbed boys, go figure. I have a lot of nephews and nieces, a godson who is 14 and plays football (he's 6'2"), and one grand niece. I've enjoyed them all. That's about all I have to share. Hope to see some familiar faces on here.
