Gus's Story

Gus lives in Severn, Maryland. After graduating from high school in 1964 Gustavo enlisted in the US Army in order to avoid getting drafted. (loco si, pero pendejo no). Basic training in Fort Polk, Louisiana made Gus appreciate home that much more. Stationed at Walter Reed General Hospital after advanced medical training in psychology at Brooke Medical Center in San Antonio, Gus was shipped to Water Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C. and there met and married Iris Miriam Feliu from Puerto Rico in 1966. Returning to Maryland after a tour in Vietnam Gus joined the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington D.C. and briefly was Chief of Detectives for the Eagle Pass Police Dept up to 1971...Gus and Miriam's marriage continues to this day, and in May of 2016 celebrated their 50th anniversary. Two girls, Belinda and Laura were born of this marriage and Gus and Miriam now have three grandchildren. Gus was a late bloomer and didn't start college until several years after high school. high school to the U.S. Army Medical Corps, then the University of Maryland, B.S., followed by a master's degree at the University of Baltimore and lastly a PhD from Sedona University. Gustavo dedicated his life's work to helping others mostly in law enforcement and later in the criminal justice field as a parole and probation officer and eventually operated his own clinic for alcohol abuse offenders, DWI and DUI. In 2002 Gus was granted certification as a professional counselor and therapist by the state of Maryland's Board of Professional Counselor's and Therapists, Department of Mental Health and Hygiene. In 2013 Gus retired for good after working in a methadone clinic in Baltimore, MD. Gus is enjoying his retirement years with writing and speaking engagements in and around the central Maryland area and enjoys gardening (cortando el sacate) and watching sports on TV. Gus is currently working on a book of his childhood experiences and growing up in southwest Texas during the late fifties and early sixties.
