Gwen's Story
i am now a cancer survivor. i was diagnosed with breast cancer in december 2010. a "thickening" was found during my yearly exam by my doctor. she then had me scheduled for a diagnostic mammogram which amounts to many more "pictures" at several different angles compared to the standard mammogram. my mammograms from the year(s) prior showed no evidence of this lump. because of this "early detection", i only had to endure a lumpectomy and radiation treatment. radiation is mild compared to chemo but it has its own brand of torture and side effects. i am on meds for five years to block any possible recurring cancer from the positive estrogen receptors i have.
i strongly urge each of you ladies to get your yearly mammograms. the life you save could be your own! guys, lovingly insist that ...Expand for more
your wives get their mammograms.
should you encounter this horrible situation, surround yourself with your loved ones, reach out and let them help you through the ordeal. above all, take care of yourself, concentrate on the care of yourself, stay in contact with a support group of friends. it is amazing how much strength this takes from you. and yes, it is hard to "let go" and let others help.
my greatest strength was in prayer....mine and those of many, many others all over town, the state of Texas and across the country. my mantra that "my God is greater than my cancer" was taken from IJohn 4:4. we had hot pink wrist bands made with G>c on one side and IJohn 4:4 on the other. you could spot them a long way away and it gave me a bit of strength every time i saw someone wearing one.
