Gwen's Story

This bio is intended primarily for people that I know and haven't seen for many many years. This will bring you up to date as to what has been going on in my life. After graduation from High School, I attended Kansas Wesleyan University for two years. I spent the next three years in Wichita working for The Boeing Company as a technical writer. In June of 1960, I married a great gal that I had met at Kansas Wesleyan University. We have been married for 62 years. I then joined the Army, rather than being drafted, in late 1962. I did this so that I could choose my career field rather than being "selected" for a career field. I choose the missile field thinking that this would be good training for when I go back to Boeing. However, I found that washing missiles would not be much help so I transferred into communications and cryptography. My first major assignment was at Headquarters United States European Command in Paris France. That was a great experience. I was chosen "Communicator of the Month." We still keep in touch with some of the friends we made there. I got to work with and know a lot of "big wigs." I loved the job and we really enjoyed Paris. My wife and I lived off base with the French. My son was born at the Paris American Hospital. I visited Germany, Switzerland, and Italy while there. Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) was just a few miles away and they had a semi-pro football team. This was a lot of fun. These players were in the Military, but during the football season their main job was to play football. It was fun watching the French eating popcorn and hot dogs at the games. I got out of the Army after my enlistment was up and went back to work for Boeing. Business was slow so I enlisted in the Air Force. My first assignment was in Oklahoma City. We loved it there and made a lot of good friends. But all good things have to come to an end sometime and I got my orders to go to Korea. I could not take my wife along and since my wife was pregnant with our second child it was tough, especially for her. My daughter was born while I was gone. My job was absolutely fabulous. I was chosen to work in special intelligence. The Korean assignment was for 13 months. I managed to pick up 12 hours from the University of Maryland while there. I spent much of my off duty time helping at an orphanage. That was a great experience! I was then stationed in St. Louis at The Aeronautical Chart and Information Center. The...Expand for more
y chose me as "Airman of the Quarter." We really enjoyed it there too. We attended many St. Louis Cardinal Baseball games. They were in the World Series that year. Many of those players are now in the Baseball Hall of Fame. I wanted to go back to college so I got out of the Air Force after this enlistment. I started classes at Fort Hays State University in the Spring of 1969. I received my BS in Business Education in the Spring of 1971 and my Masters Degree (MS) in Counseling in the Spring of 1972. I have an additional 35 graduate hours from the following Universities: Kansas, Kansas State, Emporia State, Fort Hays State, and Friends University. My wife, Leanna, got her BS Degree at Wichita State in Education and her Master of Science Degree (MS) from Fort Hays State University. I went to work at a small high school in Northwestern Kansas as their business teacher and counselor. My wife signed on as the language arts teacher in the middle school. I was there for 29 years before retiring in 2000. My wife retired with 30 years there in 2001. I was a licensed professional counselor (LPC). I was the treasurer for the counselors state organization, Kansas Personnel and Guidance Association, for two years. This organization played a big part in my professional life. I was Northwest Counselor or the year in 2000 and was elected to Northwest Region Counselors Association Hall of Fame in 2001 We are really enjoying retirement. We do what we want when we want and have no one in which to answer, except for adult children, grandkids, and great grandkids. I had a big shop built before we retired. We do things such as crafts, home repair, painting, and my wife quilts, etc. in this shop. My son and daughter both served our Nation in the Air Force. My son was an Operating Room Technician and my daughter served as an Optometrists.. My son has two boys and did work in the same hospital as Dr. Mark Praeger, from Claflin. My son now works in a hospital in KC MO My daughter is an optometrist in St. Louis MO and has a boy and a girl. I have had a great life and great friends. In the last couple years I have been communicating with friends from high school and military via email and instant messaging. I would appreciate your email address so that we can visit. This is quite lengthy and may be more than you ever wanted to know about me, but you could have quit reading at any time. Thanks for sticking around. Thanks again and have a great life. Gwen
