Gwendolyn Webb:

CLASS OF 1972
Mt. vernon, NY

Gwendolyn's Story

Life I am a lawyer living in Austin, Texas. Since I moved to Austin at 21 to go to law school (Go Horns!), I am practically a native Texan. I like to say I married into the state, since my husband, Stephen Paul Webb is a native Texan. Now, I have two daughters Stephanie Lynn (25) and Katherine Elizabeth (21) who are native Texans, also. Since my daughters have both gone to college at Yale, I have gotten back home several times over the last 7 years, even though most of my family has moved to the DC area. My husband and daughters can't believe some of the things I tell them about growing up in Mount Vernon (for example, I am a city wide jacks champion), and tease me about what they call my "New York sophistication." I see that Mount Vernon has changed a lot, but some things seem very much the same. Egmont Avenue looks like it always did, and I wonder if the kids play four square and double dutch in teh street, and if they spend summer afternoons at Memorial Field and Wilsons Woods Pool on the free days. I miss the feeling of walking home from the High School after drama practice in the spring and seeing the trees meet each other above the sidewalks, and the wisteria trees blooming next to the hydrangeas, the ...Expand for more
roses, and the marigold. Lots of us have moved to different parts of the country, but regardless, we can't help but have happy memories of goofing off on the Jewish holidays, losing Saturday afternoon football games at Memorial Field, the big fall musical, Christmas shopping and holidays, and another winning basketball season. We don't really have fall in Texas; it just stops going up to 100 degrees, so there is no cider or apple picking, and McIntosh apples are much harder to find than Red Delicious. But, I am thinking about those afternoons when people would rake leaves and burn the piles (remember when you could do that?) and we jump in the piles or stick things in such as sticks or caps, to see what happened when they caught on fire. Football is big time down here, and the kids practice their formations for hours before school (7:20 - 8:45 a.m.) and after school (4:30 -6:00 p.m.) with the band, the color guard and the band dancers. And, that's in addition to band class for one period. They still have homecoming games here, and kids actually come back from college to go on the field and be recognized. We haven't had a reunion since about 2000, so maybe we should consider having one some time soon.
