Nancy's Story

Life After H.S. I went to CA Lutheran College, for two years, majoring in English and Theater Arts (emphasis on make-up), planning to be a professional make-up artist. I got engaged, dropped out, got un-engaged, came back to AZ, worked for the State clerical pool, until I turned 21 and didn't need parental permission (Mom-No, Dad-YES), waited until Debby Metcalf, my best friend, got married on 6-25-01, then enlisted in the USAF. Basic training in San Antonio, TX, tech school in Biloxi, MS (where I met my future husband-he asked me to marry him back then, but I didn't want to be cliche, and was embarking on what I hoped would be a career), duty in Colorado Springs, CO., as a personnel specialist for 2-1/2 years, went to NCO Leadership School in Panama Beach, FL., requested cross-training into Aerospace Control and Warning, which was approved. Back to Biloxi, then on to San Jose, CA., where I worked on top of a mountain, above the cloud layer (awesome!). I was told I would be there for at least 3 years, so settle in. I took early reinlistment at 3-1/2 years, requested lateral training into a more specialized version of my new career field, had a class date set and was just waiting for a waiver of my overseas duty requirement, which came back in the form of orders to Keflavik, Iceland. I loved it there, and requested a 1 year extension which was approved, but had to come back stateside 6 months early, due to pregnancy, and lack of family housing in Keflavik. Came back to Tacoma, WA., where I spent my last 4 years of active duty. In Iceland, you could actually see Reykjavik from Keflavik (36 mi), in Tacoma-tall trees everywhere, couldn't see more than 100 yards ahead unless you were on the highway. I spent the first week or so feeling as if someone was looking over my shoulder all the time. My daughter, Kenna, was born 10-76, (name from Kenna Merrifield of Coronado, HS). I got orders for a 3 year, unaccompanied tour, to a mobile tactical radar squadron in Germany. As a...Expand for more
single mother, I had to find childcare before I could take her over, but my folks refused, and I have no siblings, so I had no alternative but to refuse the assignment, and leave active duty at the end of my 2nd term. (9y, 4m, 24d). Came back to AZ, and started ASU. Glenn found out that his only rival, the AF, was out of his way, so came up from Florida, 2-81. So, 1 child(mine) and 2 marriages and 1 child(his), later, we got married. 25 years as of 3-24-81, the same day we got our licenses. We both joined the Reserves at Luke, I as a medic, he as a cook. He got out after 4 years, I got out after 5-1/2 years, but only because I couldn't drop all the weight I gained with our daughter, Alyssa, born 5-85. We graduated together from ASU 7-85, BS psychology(me) and a BS in 'Justice Studies' (him). Kenna is now a professional pastry chef, married 12 years in January, son-Joshua, 11 as of 1-06, and Matia(Tia), 7 as of 11-05. Her husband works Electronics, and has progressed so fast, so quickly, I can't keep up. Alyssa 20, is a sophomore in college, studying Visual/Media Arts, and taking fencing. She is an extremely good writer and artist, though no Jerry or Harvey Redding. She started 'dictating' stories to dad when she was 3, then took over the computer when she learned how to navigate the keys, so Glenn built another one for himself. She has friends all over the world on the 'net, contributes art to another website, and does role-playing fantasy fiction on yet another. My husband bought me a laptop, when I really started getting in interested in Classmates, etc. He built a computer for Joshua, after he accidentally installed a program on Glenn's and bought a cheaper one for Tia, so our living room is the 'electronics room'. I worked for the State about 14 years, quit to go to nursing school, but was unable to finish because of severe back and leg pain, and other problems, and had to go on disability. I'd be glad to e-talk to anyone who may remember me. See ya later.
