Harald's Story
Life
Graduated from Downey in '75 after my junior year, moved to Austria and attended a high school in Linz for a year to improve my German. Hooked up with Kathy Aguilar ('74) who had been studying in Spain, in Italy and travelled around northern Italy. Back in Modesto I attended MJC for 2 1/2 years, then went back to Italy and Greece before transferring to UC Berkeley where I got my BS in Business. Took off for two years backpacking around the world, going west to Hawaii, Australia, New Guinea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Burma, Nepal, Bangladesh, India, and Western Europe. Came back to the States and ended up in Brooklyn for 3 months. Shared an apartment with Matt Elson ('76) and worked in Manhattan as a live art model. Got back to California, worked at the Pacific Stock Exchange on the options trading floor, then moved to Clear Lake where I was a cost engineer for 1 1/2 years on the construction of the largest gold mine in the U.S. Took off for almost another year, spending time in New Mexico before heading across the border to explore Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Came back to California, moved back to Berkeley and met my future wife on New Years Eve. Worked for an institutional investment consulting firm (BARRA) as a tech writer for a few years, then sarted graduate school at U.of Oregon in the architecture program. ed and we bought a house in SSF, I had my master's degree with an emphasis in passive heating and cooling and entered the depressed job market of 1992. While waiting for something worthwhile in architecture to open up, I took a job at Genentech (where my wife worked) as a clinical data coordinator, working on an AIDS vaccine with Don Francis (And the Band Played On). Except for a detour 3-month forgettable stint with an energy conservation company, I spent 1 1/2 years at Genentech before moving to the competition at Chiron (now Novartis). While working there in the same capacity as a consultant, I worked concurrently for an architecture firm for about a year and a half. During this time my son was born, and I finally decided that the pay was too low for the effort in architecture, and went full time into clinical data management. We moved to San Carlos, which was 15 miles further from Chiron. Luckily, Genentech lured me back after I'd been at Chiron for 6 years, and I've been there now since 2001 working on oncology trials. My wife and I work in the same building. I spend lots of my free time coaching soccer, little league, and helping out at boy scouts. I still get in some backpacking, and the corners of the world still command my attention, having recently spent time in Hong Kong, Argentina, Tanzania, and England.
