Harold's Story

Harold Anthony Saida was born in Chicago, Illinois on Christmas Day, 1949, He spent his early years growing up in the Lawndale neighborhoods of Chicago along west 26th street. Over a period of years, his family moved from California Ave, west towards the Town of Cicero. Harold attended five different elementary schools along the way. Every time his family moved, he had to attend a new school. In 1962 his Mom & Dad purchased a brand new bungalow on Mulligan Ave. in unincorporated "South Stickney Township" (Now Burbank). At that time Harold attended 7th and 8th grade classes at the Harry E. Fry Elementary School. In 1964 he graduated 8th grade and moved on to Reavis High School. In addition to attending classes, Harold played football and wrestled for Reavis. In 1968, he graduated from high school and began a whole new life. Harold went to work as an apprentice at the "Exhibit House", a firm that designed and built modular trade show exhibits for displaying goods at places like McCormick Place and other trade show sites around the world. While working at the Exhibit House, Harold attended night classes at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He studied Commercial Art, Illustration and Industrial Design. During this period of time Harold also worked part-time at the family's trucking company, Apollo Cartage, Inc. In the latter part of 1969, Harold was drafted into the U.S. Army. He took his basic training and advanced infantry training (AIT) at Fort Lewis, Washington. After training, he spent a short time in South Vietnam (RVN) and celebrated his 21st birthday at a bar in downtown Da Nang. After returning stateside, Harold was sent to the army's school at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. After concluding "Small Arms and Heavy Weapons" school, Harold was...Expand for more
sent to his next assigned post at Fort Richardson, Alaska, located just outside of Anchorage. While stationed there, he attended night classes at Alaska Methodist University (AMU) and took business management classes. He served out the remainder of his time in the army at Fort Richardson and. after discharge, Harold stayed in Alaska and went to work for Aurora Delivery Service at Anchorage International Airport. Just after New Years Day in 1972, Harold left Alaska and returned home to Chicago. He began working once again for the family's trucking and warehousing operation. In the evenings Harold took classes in business and traffic management at he U. of Illinois - Circle Campus. It was during this period of time that Harold met his future wife, Emelia Rose Torsiello. In July of 1975, Harold and Emelia were married. In 1979, their daughter, Christina was born and in 1980 their son, Anthony was born. Shortly thereafter, Harold was offered a job at a trucking company operating out of Oshkosh, Wisconsin. In July of 1981 Harold and Emelia moved their young family to Oshkosh. After a few years they bought an old Victorian house on west New York Ave and the kids grew up attending elementary, middle, and high school in Oshkosh. On St. Valentines day in 2012 a great tragedy came to the Saida family. After a long illness Harold's wife of 37 years, Emelia, passed away. It was a tragic loss for Harold and his family. She is missed very much. Harold now works as a machine operator at Pacur, LLC. in Oshkosh and is contemplating his future retirement. He has led a good life and remembers his days at Reavis High School with much fondness. He wishes all of his former classmates and friends the best of what life has to offer. May God bless you all wherever you may be!
