Harris's Story

I have had the opportunity to go back to NMB over the 30 years that I worked for the Miami-Dade County School system. I was a Special Education teacher first, then a Staffing Specialist for the Division Of Exceptional Education. I guess I can thank my 11 th grade psychology teacher, Dr. West, for setting me on this path. I must have loved Special Education, since I even got a Ph.D in it. Can you believe, "Dr. Himot"??? Who would have imagined that 40 years ago. Retirement is a well kept secret that I have enjoyed for six years now, after spending 30 years with the school system. Each time I came back to NMB, I still remember my friends, Jewel, Jerry, Ann, Eddie, Linda, Wendy and Arlene and the fun we had in Orchestra. I guess we were having fun, but what did I know , I was only 15-16 years old! David Rutman was my savior in Mrs. Chiari's French class, he always made me laugh! Have not touched a cello in almost 40 years, but still play the piano. It's just a fun thin...Expand for more
g for me. Have to say, my half-baked high school French did get my husband and me through France. Now I am waiting for my husband to retire, to start the best years of the rest of our lives. Actually met him through the school system, he is a school principal, but he sure took long enough to get together with me. Good things are certainly worth waiting for, and he is really a good guy. When I tell people that I was part of the very first group of students to attend MMB, they look at me like I am an ancient dinosaur. I cannot believe 40 years have passed, because I really do not feel 40 years older. Unfortunately, NMB Sr. and the City of NMB is nothing like it was- Corkys, Coney Island, Dr. Jaffe, Allison and Cramer, the 163rd St. Shopping Center, when it was open air and had Burdines and Jordan Marsh. All of this is gone and all that is left are memories, and pretty good ones at that. I wish only good things for my friends- good health, peace, love and happiness.
