Harry's Story
Life is good. I chose to take an early retirement from teaching/coaching in the St. Charles Parish Public School system after the hurricane. I realized there are things that I wanted to do/experience--sounds like mid-life crisis! Actually, I was working too hard to please too many other people for too long and not doing enough to please myself! So now I'm a lucky dog with too much time on my hands and I can do whatever I want any ole time!
School
I remember being lost as a goose most of the time and casually observing crazy stuff all of the time. I fondly remember a bunch of good guys who allowed me to hang around (for whatever reasons I'll probably never know)! Being part of the athletic teams was hard work but fun--win or lose. Having caring teachers/coaches were inspiring (the most wonderful people I have known up to that point) and left a real impression on me. As to doing it over again--why would I want to do that?
College
I attended Nicholls State in the fall of 1973. I was not ready for the experience. I was 17 years old and didn't know what I wanted. I majored in playing cards and sleeping late.
Eventually I chose to return to college. Beginning in the fall of 1977 I attended Evangel College in Springfield, MO. I walked on to the football team and earned...Expand for more
a partial scholarship. I stayed with it for a few years until I earned my degree in 1982.
My college years were sacrificial years in ways because I had to quit playing around. I knew I had to work much harder and smarter to get where I needed to be. At the time I had to prove to myself I could get things done and suceed. So my challenge was to do my absolute best and had the resolve to settle for nothing less than earning a college degree.
It was work...but in looking back...it was fun hanging out with many wonderful people.
Workplace
Between college stints I worked many jobs. Two memorable jobs inside da parish include working for Elevating Boats Inc. and the Parish Police Jury. My first two bosses were Lynn Dean and Henry Rodriguez--two men who were both unique and controversial.
After I earned my degree I worked at First Assembly Academy in New Orleans, and later River Oaks Academy in Belle Chasse. Neither school is around today. I taught and coached at Chalmette High in 1987-88, before an 18 year run in St. Charles Parish.
In St. Charles parish, my home-base school was Hurst Middle School in Destrehan. I taugh primary at the middle school and coached different sports for many years at both Hurst and Destrehan High.
Military
I have no military experience.
