Harvey's Story
Life
After a misguided stint in the Air Farce, in which I received a Dear John letter for Christmas (gee, thanks Laurell). I returned to Medford in 1984 after being stationed in Mississippi and Texas.
Over the next four years I went to school at Oregon Institute of Technology and took up Kenpo Karate. In 1987 I was invited to the Western US Nationals after running up a string of top 5 finishes in dozens of regional and local competitions and placed 8th. The competition came from as far away as Japan and Sweden.
After I got my degree in Electronic Engineering I left for Denver just in time to watch the massive aerospace/defense industry collapse along with the Berlin wall. I did spend several years skiing and became a true Colorado native when I blew out my right knee like so many thousands of others. I got to watch my hair fall out and spent several years with the wrong woman, which ended as spectacularly and painfully as you could possibly imagine.
January 1, 1994 I moved to Seattle where I have been ever since. I had my knee reconstructed, took a few fantastic vacations (Grand Canyon, Maui, Glacier Park, Greece, Spain, Philippines, Mexico, Alaska), and started taking martial arts again (Shitoryu-Kai). I made black belt in 2002 - in 2007, after my third successful promotion I was assigned a spot as an instructor.
I got married for the first time on September 2, 2001. We honeymooned in Greece, arriving in Athens just in time to watch the WTC attack on CNN from our room in the Grande Bretagne as it happened. We continued on to Crete, Santorini and Mykonos and had a wonderful time.
After that we visited Spain in 2003, visiting the La Rioja wine region, Andalusia, the Costa del Sol, and Gibraltar.
Next trip was the Philippines - December 2004 and January 2005. In anticipation of this I became a certified scuba diver so I could take advantage of what is billed as some of the best diving in the world.
I also tested for my third black belt level in 2006. I still haven't gotten around to finding a Japanese sword instructor, which, while still important to me, is going to take a back seat to exploring the diving opportunities in the Puget Sound region.
My wife and I sold our house in Seattle and had a $500,000 house built in "the suburbs" as everything outside of of Seattle city limits is disdainfully referred to by the local Marxist elites. I like the idea of a bigger, newer home 2 miles from work and far from the insane traffic and taxes of being close in to the city.

School
I claim two schools as my high school - Sentinel High in Missoula, and Senior High in Medford. Of the two I think I prefer Medford.
I certainly enjoyed myself more in Medford - you could actually get a job, there were places to go to meet people, the weather was better, and I got away from the bullies that had made my life hell in Missoula.
On the other hand, Medford didn't really have any school activities except for football. Missoula is where I competed on the JV Gymnastics team and did Freshman track.
While there were many pretty girls at Sentinel, the ones at Senior High were far friendlier and I went out with a large variety of them before going steady with Laurell my senior year.
Overall I thought that high school was mostly a waste of time after my Sophmore year - I already quickly and easily garnered all the credits and classes I needed to graduate by then, so my last two years were basically just time to goof off and take a few more easy AP classes.
College
OIT was fun place out in the middle of nowhere. I took heavy class loads, drank a fair amount of beer, had a girlfriend for each year, practiced martial arts, and helped manage a Pizza Hut in Medford.
Overall, I think life in the dorms was an annoying soap opera to a large extent. Being in my mid 20's and living with a pack of teenagers that, by and large, had never been away from home and couldn't legally drink proved to be an exercise in continuous eye-rolling.
The antics of several dorm characters could easily be mistaken for that of bad daytime television shows and were so stereotypical as to be scary. "(Do) Gooder" and "Drop Your Pants Nance" in particular were worthy of their own sitcoms.
Workplace
After many attempts to find constant work in the field of electronics I shifted to Quality Assurance, where I spent over 20 years.
Finding work in Colorado after graduation proved to be fruitless as most of the jobs began moving overseas shortly after I arrived in the state. I also discovered that I was pretty much burned out reading schematics and using a soldering iron as I had basically been doing that since I was 8 years old.
After moving to Seattle I was faced with the choice of either returning to restaurant management or becoming a QA professional. The QA job came through first - I am currently one of about a dozen people in the world currently holding 5 or more ASQ certifications as well as a Lead Auditor certification.
After playing manager at one company, I decided that I preferred engineering over management. Prior to my retirement I was employed as a senior level engineer at a division of Panasonic.
