Heidi's Story
Life
Time to grow up, right? I mean, we're like 30 something now and it's beyond appalling! I remember when I turned 30, I was shockingly depressed about it. I never thought it would bother, but it did. And then, I realized... 30 is XXX in Roman Numerals. Well, that got me feeling a whole helluva lot better.
So, I'm a grown up. You know, you meet business associates at a social engagement and try desperately hard not to drink too much... they'll never take you seriously with your dress thrown over your head, singing Bon Jovi and Guns-N-Roses songs at the top of your lungs. Granted, it's a great party trick with your friends, but not with someone you're "building partnerships" with.
So, I'm a grown up. I've got a mortage payment, a student loan payment, a great husband, hilarious friends and responsibilities coming out the wahzoo. I "get involved in the community" and I "try to give back to my community" and take my agendas and ride that horse til it becomes a nag.
So, I'm a grown up. I field phone calls from my boys' teach...Expand for more
ers about how they are doing in school. I hear their voices changing, their underarm hair getting more than sparse. They don't let me in the bathroom anymore when they're taking a shower. And their showers are taking a lot longer than they used to. And the shampoo and conditioner goes out a lot faster than it used to. And I have "the talk" with them. And the girls call and I get very protective and think of them as hussies. And I miss the way they used to openly hug me and now settle for they cool wave or nod they give me from across a room. And I remember what boys were like when I was in Junior High and I hope that mine don't tease unmercifully.
So, I'm a grown up. And I make mistakes all the time. And I give too much credit to the worst kind of people. And I don't give enough credit to the right kind of people. And foible. I stumble. I fall. And then I wake up again the next morning to do it all over ago. Sort of like Sisyphus. Let's face it, we're all Waiting for Godot, everyday of our lives.
Because we're grown-ups.
