Heidi's Story

I went to SUNY Geneseo after high school. I spent a lot of money, had a lot of fun, got OK grades, and a bachelors degree in biology. I spent a year trying to get someone to hire me to do anything remotely related to my degree. The other day I heard someone talking on TV that unemployment hasn't been this high since 1983. I thought "Funny, that's the year I got my 1st bachelors." After a year I went back to school and got a second bachelor's degree, this time in pharmacy. I got my pharmacist license. I loved being a pharmacist. I worked a lot, bought a house. I got a dog. I dated a guy in pharmacy school for a couple of years, until I found out he was gay. I was very badly burned by the experience, so it took me quite a while to get over it. I really wanted to have a family, not necessarily a husband but a kid. A friend convinced me I should see who was out there before adopting, so I gave myself the summer. I prayed if that mister right was out there he better find me by the end of the summer. It was the end of August and I'd had quite a few dates (for me). I saw and ad for a website called USA singles. They had a section for plus size girls looking for guys who like them. I thought "What did I have to lose? It was free." So I signed up. Two hours later I got a response from a guy in Auburn. We met for a date the next week. It turned out he had never been online looking for a date until the night he clicked on my profile. ...Expand for more
His best friend had been pestering him to look for at least someone to talk to online because he was lonely. We dated in person and emailed each other constantly. He proposed in February. We got married in June. We just celebrated our tenth anniversary. Our daughter was born in December. I developed Rheumatoid arthritis after she was born. I went from standing on my feet for a 12 hour shift to not being able to get out of bed. With medication I'm better than that now. But my joints have gone down hill to the point that I find it hard to do many daily tasks. I've had both knees replaced, and one shoulder. I have no cartilage in one elbow and the other shoulder. I have no rotator cuffs left in either shoulder. I can't bring my arms up over my head or even to my head. But my husband is the most fantastic guy. We now have two beautiful children. Holly is 9 and will be in 5th grade in the fall. Nathan is 5 and will be starting kindergarten. They both have aspergers syndrome so life can be challenging. I retired a couple of years ago when my shoulders and elbows finally made it very hard to drive. My husband was a stay at home dad until recently. He's working part time for the post office. We love each other more and more every day. I am blessed to have found a wonderful, loving, handsome, respectful, man when I was 36 years old. I am blessed to have been able to conceive 2 beautiful, smart, artistic, wonderful, healthy children.
