Helen's Story
Life
Flunked out of Sac City the third semester. Joined the Air Force, yep, me. Met and married my husband, Bennie. Got out of the Air Force at the end of that enlistment and followed Bennie around until he retired from the Air Force in 1986, here at Altus AFB in Altus, Oklahoma. He went to work for one of the contractors (retired from that 1999) doing the same thing he did in the AF, training C-5 Loadmasters. Just before he retired from the AF, I went to work on the base as a Receptionist, worked my way through several clerk-typist/secretarial jobs and finally ended up helping install one of the first computer networks on the base. pt that trained me left, they put me in charge and rewrote my job to include only the computer stuff. I did that until I retired and my husband passed away in 2007. My son was born at Travis AFB, was only two months old when we came here. He's now 36 and been married 13 years, has 3 daughters, ages 7, 4, and 3 who live just 80 miles away Do all sorts of crafts including scrapbooking, crocheting, knitting, hand sewing and embroidery, quilting, make jewelry and beadwork, paint (oil, acrylics, and watercolor), draw, pottery, stained glass, and mixed media art.
