Helen's Story

Life I graduated from Dunbar High School in 1964. Dunbar High School memories are the absolute best. I attended Dunbar from the 7th through 12th grades, and I made some life long friends, and had some of the most rewarding academic and social experiences. I had many friends and activities growing up in Somerset Projects. I was a member of the Kadets of America, which was one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. My parents were the sweetest persons I've ever known. My father was a barber down on Baltimore and Dallas Streets, and my mother was a janitress at Brywn Mawr School for Girls. My parents instilled good values and were very loving.eventhough they were no nonsense. I have two younger sisters--Patricia and Sandy both of whom graduated from Dunbar. After high school, I worked a short time as a secretary in the school office; then, I went to work for the State of Md., Dept. of Rehabilitation as a secretary. I, then, discovered that I wanted to go to college, and enrolled at Morgan State University in 2/66. I married my childhood sweetheart in 1967 who was in the United State Air Force, stationed at Nellis AFB, in Las Vegas, Nevada. I, then, moved to Las Vegas and after his four year enlistment, lived in that community for 17 years. We had a daughter who is the light of my life. Vegas, and completed by Bachelor's Degree in Social Work. I separated from my husband in 1984, and moved back to Maryland with my daughter. When I returned to Maryland, I enrolled in the University Of Maryland, School of Social Work and completed my Master's Degree in Social Work. I divorced in 1987, and I have been single since that time. I have had a variety of social work jobs, and I am currently working in a federal law enforcement agency in Washington, D.C. I am an Employee Assistance Counselor, which means I am responsible for providing counseling services for the employees and their families. It is a great job, and I love the work as well as the agency. Hopefully, I can retire in another three years. I am currently active in my church in various activities, and I participate in some volunteer activities in the community. I am very active in the Dunbar High School Alumni Committee for the Class of 1964. This experience has given me an opportunity to renew some old acquaintances. We are a very cohesive group who provide a great deal of love and support to one another. We've had some great activities, and have given scholarship money to two Dunbar High School students. I do credit Dunbar High School for my academic and career success. We had the best teachers ever. I love hearing from Dunbar Alumni. Send me an e-mail whenever you get an opportunity.
