Helen's Story
Life
After working in Wash, DC for a short time, in '78 I packed everything up & drove to CA, sight unseen. I now have 3 children, Stefan (7/91), Korinne (5/94) and Britt (3/95), as well as a Tibetan Lhasa Apso, Cimba. Cimba is my very biggest joy. The children are wonderful, & they all love each other, but they are "also" a lot of work. Cimba is just "pure" joy; he goes to work with me & sleeps in bed with us.
I've worked at Stanford Univ. "forever" because it is both a relaxed & down to earth place as well as intellectually stimulating (it matters a lot to me to be around people who are "real" & genuinely interested in what they are doing). Kent Peterson is my husband & we live in Los Altos, 8 mi S of Stanford; we met over the 5 yrs that he was a grad student in our lab.
I'm opinionated and feminist. Life sure is a lot more interesting than it was in HS when I even kept it a secret that I spoke 2 languages, one at home and one at school. I was way too sheltered & uninv...Expand for more
olved, & SHY! I can't imagine being shy now, as I'm pretty outspoken. I wish I had it all to do over again! I'd be an academic & would be very involved. HS is a fog to me; I didn't really come alive until college and I feel that I just missed all those yrs. Somewhere along the line I got a passion for learning (in HS I didn't even know what studying was). That's too bad, as if I would have discovered all that earlier (only child, overprotected, and no guidance that I can remember...), I certainly would have gone to medical school. I'm making sure the children are on the right track early and "get" the guidance. Staying here won't be easy, as I love nature and doing things outdoors. This area is getting too congested and destroyed (nothing that reducing the population wouldn't fix, which is something we need to do worldwide). I'd love to move to Oregon!
I'm planning a cross country (car) trip back to Maryland in the summer of 2002 to see what I never saw when I lived there.
