Helen's Story

Hi Y'all.... Well, it's been a long time since connecting with most of you from 'back in the day' at CHS, but after missing the 40th Re-union due to last-minute eye surgery I had, I thought I'd try reaching out this way so that those of you who still remember me might know what happened to me after leaving Galveston back in '68. After a period at Texas Women's I moved to New York to work and stay with my sister, Juanita. Hated the weather and the crowds of people and called it quits there after a couple of months..... Moved to L.A. in the Spring of '69 and met my future husband there (Robert ). We dated for a few months and were married that December. Our son was born the next year and I was a stay-at-home mom for the next couple of years taking care of him. Finally went back to work in '72 and enjoyed a career in Human Resources at several major banks in the greater L.A. area over the next almost 20 years. We bought our first home in Pasadena, Ca. back then and lived there until the early 90's when we moved out to Riverside County, Ca. After settling in I started a successful small consulting business dealing with job placement and recruiting. I enjoyed it and eventually sold it when I was ready to take a break from working too many hours... ( lol ). In late 2006 my husband decided to take an early retirement and really begin enjoying life. I couldn't argue that, so we both did. Since then we...Expand for more
travel, boat, relax and just take our time getting involved in one or another organizations. We are both involved in our community and we're both probably busier now than when we used to work. I guess it's our way of 'giving back'...... After leaving Galveston so many years ago I would come back regularly for brief visits to see my Mom. We lost her in 2005 and I only come back now once, maybe twice, a year to visit her grave-site. I had lost contact with so many of my former classmates and old friends over the years. But I always stayed in-touch with Linda A. and a couple of others, and always wondered what ever happened to you all over the years. I have to admit, I have had a Blessed life during most of this time and I hope you all have been as fortunate.. It's been nothing less than an Amazing Journey I have a feeling that we have all made over the years since leaving Central High, and I'm just glad that we're still here to enjoy it for a while longer. Oh and before I forget, my son's name is Damon, he's a musician (keyboards and percussion) and is married, lives in L.A. and travels a lot with his music. In closing, I wanted to just add that I was really looking forwards to re-connecting with all of you at the 40th Re-union..... I still can't believe it's been 40 years!!!! I'll try again the next time.. Take Care, Y'all and warmest greetings from Southern California, Helen (Mitchell) Riddick
