Helen's Story
Life
After CCHS graduation in 1967, I went to DC Teachers for a while; I couldn't play cards well at all, so I dropped out & went to work at C & P (Number, please) in 1969.
My family moved from DC and the CCHS area to Oxon Hill, MD in 1969.
I was always late, so in 1970, I left C & P (before they fired me) and went to work at Metro PD where I filed police reports and stood in line-ups as a fake suspect. Lucky for me I never got picked, because with my low pay, I couldn't afford bail money!!
I left there in 1971 to work for Justice/Bureau of Prisons (the begininig of my federal career). That job took me to NYC in 1972 where I worked in a federal jail for 6 yrs. I did a lot of wild and crazy things (in and out of the jail!!) I was in NYC at the time of the 07/77 Black-Out of the East Coast!!
In 09/77, while in NYC, the home I shared with my best friend got burglarized and we were beat up pretty badly. Luckily, the guy was caught, but only got 12 yrs; so I have not really been back to NYC ~ except for short day trips, since 1978.
I came back to DC in 1978 and got married to a Spingarn guy; we had a daughter and settled down. Our 2nd & last child/daughter was born on Halloween in '82.
I left Justice/BOP and went to work at the Dept of Energy unti...Expand for more
l 1990 when I accepted a promotion to work at Treasury/IRS.
Along the way, I did my wife & mother 'thing'; traveled/cruised, raised children, kept them in church; did volunteer work and had a fairly successful career as a government contracting officer.
He & I separated in '97 (but still date) and I generally carried on with the business of rearing my daughters and keeping them and ME out of trouble.
In 01/02 I moved back home to care for our terminally ill Momma who passed in 06/02 and I stayed there to provide day-to-day care for our step-father.
In 2003, my sister & I fulfilled a life-long dream of getting season 'Skins tickets, so now we root for the Boyz from FedEx!!!
In 2004, my youngest graduated college in May; my oldest got married in August & after 34 yrs & 9 mos., I retired in December.
Since retirement, I spend my time catching up with old friends and acquaintances, going out, hosting dinner parties, BBQs and the like at home and more travel.
Currently, my oldest daughter, son-in-law & grandson live in Orlando, FL and my Baby girl teaches music at 4 PG County elementary schools.
No major illnesses and/or issues.
All-in-all, I have been blessed and life is good.
Peace and blessings to you,
Helen Delores Carmona-Palmer (Pinki)
