Lorrie's Story

Life Ater 2 years of German with Fr. Jones,( and three years in college) we have now made the trip 3x. Oldest daughter attended a university in Germany for a year, and youngest has just arrived for a year in high school. Miss Jones reached out to more than one generation. We have also hosted students from Germany, Japan, and Australia. Great experience! Travel, and diversity is a great teacher. We will not live long enough to visit all the lands that beckon. We will be grandparents any day now! Where has the time gone! Our 30th anniversary is approaching, yet it seems like we met just a year or so ago. I enjoy bumping into old friends from high school, and college. Good memories, and even bad ones, make us who we are, and set our sails of where we are going. School I attended kindergarten at Steel Lake Presbyterian Church. Federal Way schools were too crowded and we were sent to this church. Before the year ended, we moved to Auburn. I became ill, and missed the last 3 months of school. We moved one block from West Auburn Elem, but the first day of first grade, I got a note saying the school was too crowded and I would be bussed each day to Terminal Park. I remember only a couple of people there, and most were mean. Judy H. was the only kind person the entire year. By the fall of 2nd grade, parents had gotten un returned to our neighborhood school, and I remained at West Auburn through 6th grade. Sadly, I had a few very poor teachers. Cascade Junior High was next, and we opened the "new" Cascade Junior high in 9th grade, after a fire and vadalism. AHS brought many better teachers, and adeeper love of learning. I entered Western in the fall of 71, and immediately knew it was so much better than high school. The classes were fantastic, and the students had moved way beyond the bullies we dealt with at AHS and Cascade Jr. Hi. I treasure those years! Now my school days take the form of being a substitute teacher. For the most part I enjoy it and try to keep the classes up with their regular teachers plans. Occasionally I have a student whose mom or dad attended AHS. I hope to add Auburn schools onto my schedule this year. College I attended Western Washington State College (Western Washington Universty today) from October 1971 through March of 1975. I loved everything about Western. It has incredible scenery, diverse classes to inspire anyone, and far enough from home to distance myself from parents and their problems. I majored in Recreation with an emphasis on Youth Leadership. My classes were strong in psychology, sociology, and environmental education. I worked my way through college with a day care job, and had wonderful roommates, both on campus and in our house. My sophomore year, my roommate and I became Freshman advisors. We enjoyed helping out new students. Marcia ended up dating one of her "students". Not long after, she transfered colleges when her parents moved ...Expand for more
out of state. Her "student" ended up becoming my friend, and introduced me to my future husband. He was also my friend when Marcia was killed by a drunk. Sue was another fantastic roommate. She teaches in Bellingham now, and only last year her oldest died hwn he was hit by a car! Shirley was my last roommate. She teaches in Bellevue. Her Chinese heritage taught more about the world, and I have fond memories of meeting her grandmother, and out trip to Canada to learn about Dim Sum! One roommate was Native American, and Elaine needed me to help at some of their basketball games, when players became ill. I was nearly a giant on the team, and had fun getting to know about her culture too. I had a couple of bad roommates, but one was quite memorable. She lived in the suite on the other side of my room. She was blind and had her guide dog with her. I would get upset with her because she fed her dog milk, and that poor thing always had problems with his bowels. It was not pleasant to walk into the bathroom at night and slide through squishy piles! A couple of years later, after I married and moved to California, I was coming home from work, and outside our apt. there stood this person. I jumped out to speak to her, and she had not only finished college, but got a job nearly 1000 miles from her home, and somehow, we ended up in the same apartment building. She was at the bus stop on her way to work, about 20 miles away. She had learned about caring for her dog, and had become a very successful person. Everyone has something to teach. It is not all in the classroom or written in our textbooks. April of 2008. Since I wrote the above we have been blessed with 2 grandchildren. Carter is now 3 1/2 and Bella turned one yesterday. I cannot get enough of them. They are filled with joy and love. When returning from an out of state trip last week, Carter told me that they were back on earth! There is much good in his generation. Hope for the world. Career: My career has been mainly my children. Once the first one came home from the hospital there was no one I would allow to raise my child. Through the years I have taught self reliance classes to children where ever children can be found: Parks and Rec programs, schools (private and public), churches, day care centers etc. I still teach one class, but for the most part, I have eased into a new job. In 2001 I began substituting in the Federal Way Public Schools as an Emergency sub. Since Jan, 2008 I have mostly filled in as an a long term postion as a math teacher in an elementary school. Small groups of children come to me for extra help, hoping to boost their WASL scores. No one has ever said to me, "You really should become a math teacher!" Yet that is what I do. Kids today are learning math at younger and younger ages. Some of the things kids are getting in 3rd grade, I got in geometry in the 10th grade. New world, and high expectations.
