Henry's Story
Wow! Where do I begin? Right after graduating I had to wait until Sept. to join the Navy. I got to travel half way around the world, but I'll spare you the boring details. Ha Ha The biggest thing that happened then was when I was instititionized because a drug induced psychotic breakdown. It happened in 1977 after my father died. I was so brain damaged that I would never get out, or so the Dr. told my mother. After much prayer from family and friends, I was out 2 weeks later. That was when I knew God was looking after me. That pretty much took the rest of the 70's.
I got out in Oct. of '79, worked 2 months at Union Sugar, then started AHC in Jan. '80. Graduated in '82, went through a failed marriage that produced my only child, Krystal Rose. Had various jobs, started coaching football, doing plenty of drinking and drugs, had a serious knee injury while going to Cal Poly SLO. The worst part of this decade was the day I tried to kill myself and was stopped by a knock on the door. It was an old friend, Jeff Almaguer, who came by to ask me if I wanted to coach girls basketball. My life changed forever, God had a plan for me.
The '90's were incredible. In 1991, with the help of Jeff, we won a Southern California state championship with a 3rd & 4th grade girls recreation team. That same year I rebuilt a park in my home town as my senior project. Both of these had never been done before in my town or at the university. I met my now wife in 1997, got myteaching credential in '99, and went to a brand new school in Oct. 2000.
I started teaching 2nd grade for three years and was then moved-up to 5th grade. In my second year I was asked by the principal to start the sports program and I took it and ran. I became the AD and have coached football, basketball, soccer, track and golf. We have some of the bests athletes in the district. Keeping them in school is the problem. I wo...Expand for more
rk in a gang-invested, poverty strickened area called the "east side ". The graduation rate is low for students going through our district. But I have done well with these kids and try to use sports to motivate them. I also use my experience to help the more troubled kids. I have also worked as an advisor for the student council, a member of the Parent/Teacher Club and get involved in community events like collecting food for the Foodbank at Xmas time. I have also started raising money at our school for the Pennies for Patients program to help kids with cancer. I guess people started to notice. I won a school award about 8 years ago for employee of year and in 2013 I recieved a "Teacher of the Year" award from Assemblyman Luis Alejo. It was a blessing and I give God all the glory and thanks for saving me from death and fulfilling my goals in life. I couldn't be happier, thank you Jesus!
This year alone has been quite a ride. One of my students almost died in a serious car crash and one of my former students was murdered. Our golf team made the playoffs again and took 4th place out of 11, I'll take it in a transition year. The great news here was when we got our new golf clubs one of my players on the 1st swing on the 1st hole, got a hole-in-one. My class made TV news on KION for raising$6,000 for Pennies for Patients, a former student who was valedictorian at his HS, nominated me as his most inspirational teacher. At the same time, our school mural finally got painted after 7 years of fundraising and politics.(picture pending) over the last three years I have been trying to become a better Christian; praying, reading scripture, bible study, and spiritual weekend conferences. It has literally done miracles in my life and I continue to grow and get blessed. I missed a lot of stuff, but those are the highlights. Hope I didn't bore you. God bless, Henry Armenta Jr. :)
