Henry's Story

Life How bout dem Saints!!! I guess those that knew me in high school probably called me "Rudy". I don't know if many know that I got the nickname from the character in the Fat Albert cartoon, lol. Someone in the band gave it to me my freshman year and it just stuck! I was most known in school for my afro, playing valve trombone as well as some of the girls I dated. I often hung with Michael Allen and Ronald Gillard but kicked it with most of the guys from da band and football team, who like me had a way with the girls (Donald Carey was my mine partner in crime)! NOW A DAYS!!! My children are grown, my oldest is 32 and youngest 22! I am divorced and received my Master of Public Administration in Public Policy with a dual focus of Leadership-Strategic Planning and Government Administration (Healthcare)from Florida State University [Go Seminoles]. I also am a Master of Science Candidate with an additional 27 hrs of graduate study completed as a radiology practitioner. I live between Tallahassee (where I see FAMU sporting da orange and green) and Atlanta where I started a non-profit organization to help adolescent young men transition into manhood. I am a Florida delegate in the Democratic party and try to do my part to advocate change. My vision is to setup a branch of my organization in New Orleans soon and work to give those young brothers who like me want to succeed. After high school I served in the US Marines, rode on the ambulance in New Orleans and graduated from Charity Hospital radiology program. I left Charity and became a radiology supervisor of the Presidents' Hospital in Bethesda, MD. I rose through the ranks to become a healthcare administrator. I was blessed enough to manage the radiology department at the National Naval Hospital in Bethesda for 12 yrs where I met and administered care to Ronald Reagan, GHW Bush and Bill/Hillary Clinton. Though I got an opportunity to meet Heads-of-State as well as most of the known politicians, the high point of my career came when I met the Honorable, Thurgood Marshall! I ne...Expand for more
rvously went out and introduced myself as the manager of radiology and told him I had an opportunity that was afforded to me because of his gallant and noble efforts. (Sidebar: To those who do not know, Mr. Marshall argued 29 times in front of the US Supreme Court and walked away with 29 favorable decisions. NO ONE HAS OR WILL REPEAT THAT FEAT!) Mr. Marshall being the humble man he was, asked me to sit next to him and though in pain, told me, "Son there is nothing special about me. I just did the best that I could with what I had." Ironically, shortly thereafter, I met someone at a poetry slam and submitted a couple of narratives I wrote; one in honor to my mother who passed in 1999 and the other about choosing a partner. They were featured in a book titled, "Paper Thin, Soul Deep". This book is an anthology of male writers that was written by three brothers from the NOLA area. In closing, to those classmates that emailed me here and did not receive a response, I apologize, the best place to find me is face book! My favorite subject at Carver was girls and music but I am glad I listened to Mrs. Moore and some of the other teachers who told me, "Batiste you can do great things if you just apply yourself!" I guess you can tell that I paid enough attention to learn to write well, lol. Look for my books in the next few years, (after I finish my masters of course). I think its titled will be, "From da Principal's Office; Confessions of a Badd Boy". To the women I dated, I promise not to tell [all], lol. The other one may be a short set of political narratives and analyses based on President Obama's journey to the White House. To those who said Carver did not give us the tools necessary to succeed, I say, au contraire. I am just as proud of your successes Carverites as I am of my own!!! To the Mr. Hoovers and Mr. Lewis' as well as teachers who I did not mention by name that gave of themselves, God Bless. Henry Batiste, Jr., Master of Public Administration, RT(R), ARRT Master of Science Candidate I'm SO Glad I am a CARVER RAM!
