Henry's Story

Still kicking-lots of gratitude in my life and a couple of tragedies. Suspect true for most of us that have matured en route to a 50th reunion. I have been lucky to have many adventures and travels. I played rugby for 30 years with tours to Soviet Union ('78"), England '81, Argentina '87. Mostly member of Mystic River - Boston, Mad River Vt and Springfield MA. Also played in Saranac NY tourney, Canada , and Colorado. I have been a performing clown: Henry Brown Clown of Renown from Out of Town. mostly in MA, and New England-Traveled with Clyde Beatty Cole Bros Circus summer of '75 as Fire eater in side show- - guest appearances as clown in subsequent years, Also motorcycle tour "76, with street performances in Old Montreal ( visited Tom Cruger and Jim Sundquist) and then Aspen CO. Did some river running and hippie festivals while at it. Now I bicycle tour, nordic and back country ski and and twilight of hiking. Greyson Highlands Va, 100 Mile Wilderness ME, and most recently Wind River Range, Slide Lake Wyoming with Harry McWreath Ben McKel.eway and my bro Jim for solar eclipse. FFO. After college at William & Mary- (where i had privilege of being in radical 2% that dean wanted to eliminate)- settled in MA. Became special education teacher and administrator- a great time we got services and education to many people who had no services before. Worked w K through High School- but best of all I met my wife Deb (35 years and counting). Apartment management was my second career and gave me resources to be Retired now!- Deb and I travel in our small RV, last month to Nova Scotia. Last year spent September in Ireland where we navigated a week in our 50' barge for two. Italy (my mother's family) and Costa Rica are most traveled other countries. On other hand, tragedy in ' 82, returning f...Expand for more
rom my honeymoon, found my Dad at age 60 was paralyzed for life- result of a bicycle accident. He underwent a year of rehab and went on to live mostly independently as a partial quad for 22 more years. He was never bitter and expressed gratitude that he had resources to live on own- a finest example of his unselfish example that I was raised with. I have two children, Elsa who is living in Bed Sty Brooklyn, social aware, performing artist with friends , women;s collective, and most recently a software engineer- looking to support herself and her arts. My son Patrick sadly passed away 20 months ago from an opioid overdose. He was a bright, compassionate, hardworking young man ( age 28). This man made and marketed epidemic is maddening. Pat and I shared a love of snow.- skiing snowboarding. Our last conversation, our parting words to each other, " I love you" -not knowing he would die less than 12 hours later. After years of Medicine Assisted Therapy and counseling- really thought he had turned the corner. Relapse is a b**** and part of the disease. Ironically some of same companies that are rich - billions of annual profits- are also providing the drugs of recovery- but a much more comprehensive approach is needed. I have been active in local education and social justice activism around this horrible issue- am taking a break presently. Week after reunion having a dedication of park bench memorial for Pat - where he drove the kiddie locomotive for summers. Deb and I dance weekly- we have been doing social ballroom and latin for years and more recently Argentine tango which is intensely intimate and challenging. Well life i guess is a dance, when we stumble or falter, time to try again and move to music. Peace and love -always look forward to seeing friends, old and new. Henry B
