Life After high school, I attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in order to study architecture. Everything seemed to go OK for a while. During my second year, I came to the sad realization that I was terrible at drawing. Not knowing what to do, I moved back to San Jose in 1985. Eventually, I became interested in law enforcement. I was hired by the Salinas Police Department in 1988 and have been there ever since. I love my job. I have been fortunate to work assignments such as bike patrol, field training and crime scene investigations. For a couple of years, I was a school resource officer and spent a lot of time teaching gang prevention courses in the elementary schools. I really learned to appreciate the hard work that goes into teaching in a classroom! I was also assigned to the Investigations Division as a detective in the sex crimes unit for 4 years. Most recently, I have been promoted to sergeant and have been back on patrol since 2006. I met my first wife, Cathy, in 1991. She was a deputy sheriff and we met while I was booking a prisoner in the county jail. We dated for a year and got married just before our first boy, Eric (1992) was born.
