Henry's Story
Hi, this is Henry Wallace Jordan. I was born, April 01, 1948, in Quincy, Florida, at 233 South Street, and raised one block South of Arnette Chapel AME Church, of which I was a member. I am an only child (Mrs Mariah Terry's grandchild).
My neighbors were the Galloways, the Reagins (Johnny), the Farmers (Leonard), the Longs, the Smiths (Bobo, Lamar), the Scotts (Sam, Leroy), the Hinsons, (Bessie, Virgina) and the Bryants, (Joseph better known as train).
I attended Stevens Elementary School from 1954 to 1960. My first grade teacher was Mrs. Akins; second grade, Mrs. Davis-Bryant; third grade, Mrs. Thompson; fourth grade, Mrs. Swatson; fifth grade, Mrs. King; sixth grade, Mr. Palmer ( in the old building with the potbelly heater) and Mrs. Drayton.
I attended Carter-Parramore High School from 1960 to 1966. My homerooms were 7-4, 8-4, 9-4, 10-4, 11-4 and 12-6. I was in the Foreign Languages Cl...Expand for more
ub (Mr. Carswell) and the school's Honor Guard (drill) team. One of my best friends was Issac Gilliams.
I worked in the tobacco fields under the supervision of Clinton Jordan ..... for years. It was slave's work but it was the only work, to do at the time. DON'T BE ANGRY, ABOUT THINGS YOU HAVE NO CONTROL OVER, IT MAY MAKE YOU A BETTER PERSON.
I attended Florida Memorial College in St. Augustine, Florida (Rev. Sumpter's alma mater) for a minute, joined the Marine Corps and went to Vietnam for a year. I married my college sweetheart (Irene Callahan, Fort Myers, Florida), for 17 years, had three children and then divorced.
I then went back to school and worked as a Police Officer in one of the toughest sections of Miami-Dade County (Opa-locka) for 25 years. All thanks to God that I was not hurt or killed in that place. I retired as a Police Lieutenant in 2006. I am now enjoying retirement.
