Henry's Story

Life My life's story in 4000 characters or less? (This part was written when only 4000 characters were allowed in this section of classmates) Can not be done. Not because I am so interesting, but I can sometimes ramble. That is partly why I write poetry (only as a hobby). Though I have published some poetry and have a few more of my poems coming out in a poetry anthology soon called "Sanctified". Poetry forces me to say a lot with few words. My favorite form of poetry? Haiku. Only 17 syllables total. But, as I said earlier. It can not be done, not by me. So, I give my Haiku titles and call them Henrikus. (That gives me more syllables than 17 to work with). Right now I am working on a Henriku Calendar. That gives me 6200 syllables to work with, plus all the titles. That way I have a better chance of saying what I want. Thank you Mrs. Mateer, Mr. Muth and Mrs. Ballenger and Profs. Wead, Gunther and Ewing. It is all your fault. You pointed me to my literary muse and it will not let go. Now I have all the angst to go with it. Yes, thank you very, very much indeed. I have lived an eclectic life since high school. First, look at all the colleges. Three listed in my portfolio. Plus Trinity Bible Institute in Ellendale, ND (Fall of 1974) between Southern Calif. Col. (Vanguard U) and Black Hills State. Then on to LIFE Bible College (Life Pacific College) in California. Looked like I was going to be a preacher, huh? Well, actually, my time at BHSC was partly to be a teacher. My goal was to be an administrator of a Christian School, or director of Christian Ed in some church. But, no matter how well I knew Theology, Education or Administration, there was no way the churches of my conservative background were going to let me minister. At least they wouldn't after I decided to show some integrity and be honest about being gay. Yes, it is true. Though I gave my life to the church, it turned its back on me. Local school districts would do the same. Thank God I also took a lot of classes in business, science, social sciences, humanities, etc. While I was attending LIFE, I was already working in the International Marketing Division at Max Factor Cosmetics. Thus started a long corporate career working primarily on the administrative and planning aspects of developing new products. Thank you Mr. Vavruska and Mrs. Kaiser for your business classes. And thank you Mr. Schmidt, Mr. and Mrs. Fister, Mr. Sharbo, Mr. Soder and Mrs. Ruddell for your business mentoring. In hindsight, I was so blessed and fortunate by the community I grew up in, by the schools and church I attended and the business role models I had in my young life. For me, working in the corporate world came easy. But, it is only because I overcame many of the hard hurdles at an early age in a town called Belle Fourche, SD. For the record, I am still gay, still Christian (yes, they can and do co-exist) and single. I did have a partner for a few years while in L.A. until he passed away in 1996. And I did not, could not, totally turn my back on the church. In fact, I have been very active. But, my focus now is on those like me, who have been disenfranchised from the traditional church -- just like Christ would. For that the church trained me very well. Most of my corporate career has been in Cosmetics and Fragrances. In 1998 I changed focus and went to work for Nestlé USA in the Regulatory Affairs Dept. at their corporate headquarters in Glendale, CA. In 2001 we bought the Ralston Purina Company. In 2002 we merged our former PetCare Division with Ralston forming a new company located out of the former Purina offices in St. Louis. It is called Nestlé Purina PetCare Company. In 2002, I relocated my offices to St. Louis to help integrate the two businesses. Now I have a home in Illinois that I love. I commute less than half an hour to a job in downtown St. Louis that I love. Life is good. God is good. Except I still passionately hate the cold. That is one thing South Dakota didn¿t do a good job of teaching me. In that regard, I still miss California. ---- Now to answer questions from the story wizard I always wanted to be a poet, architect, teacher or business person when I grew up. My family and friends often ignored my own wishes or future hopes. Though a lot of folks discouraged the poetry part or didn't think I would be successful as an adult. As it turns out, they were entitled to their opinion. My guidance counselor actually suggested I not go to college because he thought I could do better staying at home and working in retail like I had through high school. Sure, I loved working at Fister's Dept. Store with a passion. But, I had other designs beyond that for my life. But life is about more than work. I relax by relaxing. That often includes reducing stress and getting adequate sleep, watching TV or movies on DVD (thank you NetFlix), reading and writing, painting, playing the piano, gardening, going to a movie or the theatre or shopping. I'm also a news junkie -- was even before I took numerous journalism classes. From my recollection, I was not very wild in school. If I did any really wild things I guess others will have to let me know what they were. I genuinely would appreciate knowing what they are -- cuz I forget (or remain in denial). Wild stories from school days are always good party stories. Alas, I have very few party stories to tell. So, help me out please. . If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have adequate time to meet the tasks required, adequate resources, and a decent work / life balance where everyone's personal lives are as respected as their work lives to be able to deal with the day-to-day needs of all concerned. It is also important to me to utilize at least some of the skills I developed over the years. More importantly, I would hope it is also a job where I can pursue my passions for life, not just for making a living. . My favorite heroes include the fictional characters of C.S. Lewis, especially Aslan (from the Chronicles of Narnia) -- mainly because of how he represents Christ to the world. Another heroine is Rahab the Harlot who was listed in the heroes of faith in Hebrews among all those males. In particular she was not identified as Mrs So-and-so, or the wife of such-and-such, but as Rahab the Harlot, which was purely a sexual identity. For primarily theological reasons this is important to me. This tells me more than man does, God looks beyond so much more than one¿s goody two-shoes life in accounting righteousness to believers. Other heroes include Billy Graham and Sister Aimee Semple McPherson, the founder of Angeles Temple and The International Church of the Foursquare Gospel. Political heroes include Presidents Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln. Despite their flaws, these four Presidents were lauded enough to be included in the Shrine of Democracy -- or Mt. Rushmore as it is better known to the general public. Over the years Mt. Rushmore has become an iconic masterpiece to me. I will never cease to be inspired by its awe, beauty and majesty. Present day heroes include Justin Lee, Troy Perry and Dr. Ralph Blair. My most recent hero is Chuck Smith, Jr. Stay tuned for later developments as to why that is (as of 05/30/08) I grew up in South Dakota and returned there for college and to work at Mt. Rushmore. Also lived in Ellendale, ND during college as well as Costa Mesa, CA and Los Angeles. My first work transfer was as an office manager for MONY (Mutual of New York) Financial Services in Shreveport, LA. Here I had a fairly significant role managing a major regional agency and integrating the former Little Rock, AR agency into ours. Having successfully completed that, I then returned back to the cosmetic business and moved to New Jersey, Staten Island, NY and Manhattan, NY (where I did a reverse commute by train for work in Stamford / Old Greenwich, CT). Believe it or not it was less expensive at the time to live in Manhattan than in the Greenwich area of Connecticut. I also loved living in New York for all the culture it offered. Shortly after, however, the same cosmetic company moved me back to Brentwood (L.A.), CA. Following this I lived in West Hollywood / Hollywood and Montecito Heights, (L.A.), CA. My present company relocated me to work in St. Louis where I now live in the Illinois suburbs. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the closet space to make them larger and add on a master bathroom. It¿s a very ¿Frank Lloyd Wright¿ looking home in the prairie school manner with linear flowing lines, a hip roof and stone & brick siding. All it lacks is the Frank Lloyd Wright styled windows. I thought of adding some. However, in tornado alley, that may not be the best investment. My dream home would be similar to what I have now but in a more temperate climate like Southern California. I have no one, no kids, no wife to pass on history about my life (that¿s from a poem I wrote). I guess that¿s why I am putting part of my life down here in this space for the world to see. I remain single and content to remain single. . I would love to see all my teachers again. There was one teacher I didn't like much while I was in her class. But, as adults she and I built bridges across the points that divided us to where we developed a healthy respect for each other. All the others I always had great respect for even while I was their student. I guess I just naturally loved to learn and they were all superb at facilitating learning. I particularly appreciated Mrs. Mateer for letting me serve as an aide to her Jr. High English classes and for Mrs. Giacometto for all the little areas in whic...Expand for more
h she pushed me beyond my comfort zone. Mrs. Mollett, I would not be the creative person I am today without your tireless time and devotion to help make me a better musician and creative thinker. My greatest improvement was in the 4th Grade thanks to Mrs. Moncur. Mrs. Christopherson probably served me best by helping me develop a positive image for myself and helped produce some needed advanced math and reading skills. I have a zest for understanding the world better and love to travel, including internationally because of Mr. Dorsett¿s geography class. Mr. Muth -- wow. I wish everyone could understand literature through the same perspective and eyes you taught us to look at it with. Mr. Gillespie, I owe part of my career to you. The love of science and the process of scientific discovery you honed into me served me well as I work with top scientist from around the world. A few college professors are a different story. Some of them were superb. Mr. Gunther, I owe so much of my savvy and love for journalism to you. Mr. Matsdorf, your skill at teaching me practical Greek and Hebrew study methods to understand the Bible probably saved me from a life of living to please others rather than how God designed me to be all because I learned exactly what the Bible did and didn¿t say on certain subjects. And Dr. Eno, Romans has been the most practical application class for my personal living than any I could have taken. I also appreciate your personal friendship over the years. Many other professors, including some of my own relatives, I respect in their disciplines. But, many Profs in the Christian colleges I attended have a lot of bridge building to do before they get my respect back. A big part of this is their purposeful misuse and abuse of the Bible against gay and lesbian sons and daughters of the church. I can¿t tell you how many lives I have seen destroyed because of how you have placed priorities of legalism over grace and forced it on others, contrary to what you even know the Bible truly says about it all. Some of you have a lot of repenting to do. (Yes, I can be activistic at times when it is appropriate and necessary). Now on to more frivolous things. If I won $100 million, I'd give 50% of it to various charities, and then spend the rest on developing a business that I could manage. This would be a Department Store style business like Fister's Dept. Store that I worked in through high school. Another option I could be very passionate about is a fragrance marketing and manufacturing company. I would also invest a part of the money in a brownstone in NYC and prime, secluded real estate in the Black Hills. I've lived in more than 7 dorms and 2 apartments during my college years. I was never part of the Greek system. But, I loved campus life. When I was a student at Black Hills State, I was part of the programming board of the Student Union and eventually became chairman of the Student Union Board (SUB). This was probably the best thing I did in my life to help develop and enhance my future business career skills. Grades suffered, but in the long run it was the wisest priority I could make at the time. A special thank you goes out to Jo Marie Ruddell for her mentoring of me during this time period. One plus was also the times I worked on campus that also helped to draw me into campus life. One drawback was the times I had to work off campus without other students around. Even then, when I went to school at LIFE, I worked with several fellow students, thus developing close bonds not otherwise found on campus. To be truly happy I would be doing all the creative things I love to do without the grind of the corporate environment I've worked in for so many years. In reality, however, there is a healthy amount of happiness and contentment that comes from being able to afford a decent lifestyle because of the corporate environment I've been a part of for so many years. My current age is 53. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be wrinkled, white-haired homebodies. I was so completely correct about many of them (Oh, I¿m talking about myself here ¿ a wrinkled, white-haired homebody). Others surprise me with their continued quest to remain youthful in looks and spirit. Though my career has been very different than I could have planned out, it has been nevertheless very rewarding. Over time, I developed and utilized many different skill sets in my career that I would not have envisioned at the age of 12. A large part of this success I attribute to a very broad liberal arts education that started in early elementary school and continued throughout college. It is amazing how many of the skills I learned through various church responsibilities over the years contributed to my business success. The one thing I learned best throughout all my education was how to transfer learning skills from one discipline to a very different and often contrary discipline. This helped me quickly ramp up to very dissimilar jobs in very opposite environments than my prior ones. Here are some examples. I went from retail sales to legal advertising and administration. I followed this with the international marketing of cosmetics and fragrances. I even got to work with such spokesmodels like Jane Seymour and Jaclyn Smith. .This in turn helped position me as a liaison between international marketing, other marketing support groups, supply chain planners and our R&D folks. As such I took what science background I had and parlayed it into a long history in the field of consumer new product development (mostly on the R&D side) working closely with scientists, marketing professionals and project management folks of all kinds. I then further parlayed all of this into the Regulatory Affairs environment. Here a big part of my function was/is to serve as compliance liaison between our corporate interests and various government entities regarding product labeling and legal claims management. All that from the guy who started out mowing lawns, sweeping floors and doing windows at Becker's Drug Store. Yes, I still dress like I did 10 or 20 years ago. Actually then I probably wore more suits to the office and church and had a much more savvy wardrobe. Now everything is casual. The change from a stylin business attire to business causal all happened when I was just beginning to get a very solid wardrobe put together of suits and hundreds of ties -- all now in storage. Having a past that includes significant jobs in retail clothing, the beauty industry, beauty pageants and modeling, etc., I do have a keen sense of style. But, I also have little vanity. As long as it is somewhat stylish, color coordinated and clean, you will often find me wearing someone's hand-me-downs that I got from Goodwill. After all, why spend $50.00 on a shirt at a Dept. Store when you can get ten of them from Goodwill, contributing to a good business model helping needing people at their very basic level, and using the savings for a more important need beyond my own. I think some who knew my parental family, as always having to struggle financially and socially, would be surprised at my present life vocationally and socially. The more my poetry gets published, the more I think they will also be surprised at my literary creativity. Also, unless they were with me in church or in my music theory classes, most would not realize how musically adept I have been and can be. The same is true of theater and visual arts. Most people, including me, were in denial about my sexual preferences while I was in school, but I don't think it really should be a surprise to anyone. What is more at issue with many of them however, would be that I am quite confident that God created me to love someone of the same gender rather than the opposite gender. I have no doubts medically and scientifically that it is prebirth disposition (different from it being genetic) that is neither contrary to Christian principles nor the mandates of the Bible. Many of those in my past have strict, legalistic religious backgrounds. In this realm many of them want to be the keeper of secrets and the arbitrators of judgment rather than instillers of grace and lovers of their neighbors as Christ commanded them to be. As such, this is the one area they will be the most uncomfortable with -- just because it hasn't been in their realm of possibility based on their prior acculturation and socialization of the issue. My first jobs were at various residences of townsfolks such as the Fowlers, Mrs. Penfold, etc, (usually homes on Kingsbury Street) where I got paid below minimum wage to mow lawns and do other lawn chores. This was around the 3rd to 6th grades. What I remember most about it is being welcome in their homes, being given refreshments like lemonade and a pastry after a hard afternoon of work and basking in surroundings much grander than I was used to in my own home. This probably played a big role in motivating me towards upward mobility. Mrs. Penfold in particular was fond of showing me some of her china, vases, art objects, etc. because she knew I appreciated them. She would often send home with me the latest selling brochures for fine items like Buick or Cadillac cars, art auction and fine antique catalogues, home furnishing and gardening magazines, etc. I think she was perhaps the first person to understand and seek to help nourish my gay sensibilities even before I had a clue. Didn't I tell you at the start I could ramble? This is still in draft form. You might check in here later for a better edited, more cohesive version. But, my life's an open book. I don't mind you reading about it even with the writing flaws.
