Henry's Story
Childhood
I was born in San Francisco but spent my early childhood years in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Singapore. I have two younger sisters, Carolyn and Joan. We finally returned to the "States" in '57, though my dad continued to travel extensively in Southeast Asia. We relocated to SoCal in '59 from the Bay Area.
School
After attending a multitude of grammar schools in the US and SE Asia, we settled down in Canoga Park long enough to start and finish junior high from '59 to '62 at John Sutter Jr. High School. We moved to Van Nuys in '62 and attended Van Nuys High School, graduating in '65. After returning from service overseas, I studied at LA Valley College, Sacramento City College, and CSU Sacto over a period of about ten years.
Military
I enlisted in the Army in July, '65. I did my basic training at Ft. Ord and AIT at Sandia Base, NM where we learned to take nuclear warheads apart. In February '66 I shipped out to Germany on the USNS Patch. I served in Munster, Buren, and Cakmakli (Turkey) until June '68.
Family
I met my first wife in Van Nuys after the army and we were married in '71, 9/11 to be exact. Ironic! We had two beautiful daughters who inherited their mother's looks, thank goodness. That side of the family, the Russells, definitely had the looks, ie: Jane Russell. Both are now married and live in the Central Coast. I divorced in '78 and did not remarry for 26 years! I am married to a wonderful woman now, Cheryl, ...Expand for more
eighteen years my junior but every bit my equal.
Career(s) and Locations
Where do I begin? After the service, I spent several years with the AAA in customer service and insurance sales in the LA area and then in Sacramento while raising my young family and going to shcool part-time. Then, I ventured into the business school industry as a recruiter and later a director in San Diego. Not happy with that, following my divorce, I entered the resataurant business where I remained for several years in a variety of capacities and locations between San Diego, Florida, New York, and finally back to the Bay Area. I have always wanted to open a restaurant but the stars never quite lined up right. Perhaps when I retire? At age 40, I decided there was no more future in bartending so I left the best bartending job I ever had in a luxury hotel next to SFO and landed an entry-level job with Citibank in the San Mateo. 1n '95, Citi consolidated its operations to Kansas City. I could not bring myself to move there and a vendor offered me a job in Manhattan, NY. I made the move to NYC and still single and an empty-nester, bought a 42' sailboat and lived aboard, yes, winters and all! It was a great experience for eight years. Then I met Cheryl on a trip to Hong Kong, and she agreed to marry me and join me.....not on the boat! So now we live in Long Beach, NY. I will be retiring soon and the plan is to relocate again to California, closer to my grandkids.
