Henry's Story

Life After working just outside of Boston for three years I decided it was time for a change. Not happy with the urban/suburban environment, finding myself subscribing to too many outdoor magazines and not actually embarking on my own adventures I packed up and headed to Vermont. I was off to be a ski bum (actually a snowboard bum). To hell with my two bachelors degrees, history and finance, and my four years of accounting and finance experience - I was now a custodian for Okemo Mountain working the second shift so I could snowboard all day. I lost forty pounds, eliminated all my debt, and cut my expenses to the bare minimum. That following summer I volunteered for Heifer Project International at Overlook Farm in Rutland, MA first as a agrilculture/education intern and then as a garden intern. I performed morning chores such as watering and feeding the animals, milking the cows and goats, and moving animals around the farm. I lead tours, facilitated educational games and activities and worked in the organic gardens spread around the farm. I also met my future wife, Lauren, on ...Expand for more
the farm where she was a summer camp counselor. Owing to previous committments that Lauren had made we hung around central MA that fall before heading back to Okemo for another winter of snowboard bumming. We have been living up in Proctorsville ever since, first renting room and sharing a house for a couple of years and now living in a small house that we rent. Lauren works for the Ludlow school district as a paraeducator/classroom aide and I continue to work at Okemo as a groundsperson in the summer and a pool technician during the winter. She provides the insurance and I provide the ski passes. We live a simple life -very little expenses, one car, organic food and no TV. We cook our meals from scratch, read as many books as we can, and spend as much time as possible with our lovable dog Judge. Life is good. I'm pondering using my college degrees once again and returning to the accounting/finance field this spring (2007). We'll see. Long-term goals are to buy a pience of land, build our own house, quit our jobs and provide as much of our needs as possible from our own land.
