Henry's Story

Life After LSRHS After graduating from LSRHS in 1968 attending college was most desirable; it was either there or being drafted for military duty in Viet Nam. I was proficient in math and the sciences, so I opted to attend Lowell Technological Institute, Lowell, MA, as suggested by Mrs. Adrian. I selected electrical engineering as a major but became interested in chemical engineering. I did not pursue changing majors for fear of not maintaining the 4S draft deferment status to complete the chemical engineering degree program and struggled through the EE program and did not graduate. I ended up being drafted in October of 1972, just my luck. Ten days before entering the US Army I married my girl friend of 2 years, Marcia, one of 6 sisters in an American Irish-Catholic family. For (2) years we lived in El Paso, TX and I served in the 591st Military Police company at Fort Bliss. A real growing up experience involving real life police situations and interacting with people from all classes of people in the biggest club in the world as one drill sergeant called it, the US Army. Marcia and I returned to MA with a baby due in August 1975. I finished college, quit smoking, 1st son Greg was born and then began my career in fire protection at Fenwal Inc. in 1976. The devastating family business fire I experienced at a young age eventually led me into the fire protection business and for more than 28 years my profession revolved around the engineering and design of explosion protection systems that protect human life and industrial plants. As a bonus I have traveled to many countries fulfilling my world travel dreams. A 2nd son Justin was born and a house in Marlboro, MA was purchased in 1979. ured two sons who are now grown men (33 and 30 years old), Greg a self employed carpenter and Justin a successful investment banker. Marcia was the primary educator and I provided a financially secure home environment. We both facilitated their schooling and social growth by networking with other home-schooling families and being actively involved with local youth sport groups in the community. As a family we vacationed most summers at Frye Island Maine. In 1999 Marcia was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in September and passed away in December. After 27 years of marriage and beginning the next phase of our relationship, she was gone. We had just purchased a vacation home in Vermont, were working out the difficulties in our relationship and beginning to plan for our retirement years. After two years of grieving, Greg married and Justin completing college I decided to find a female companion. In October of 2001 I internet dated and met Sandy, a Delta flight attendant. We both lost close friends to ovarian cancer, shared common interests (hiking, travel, photography and observing nature) and both possessed a genuine love for life. In September of 2005 we made the commitment to each other and married. For 4 years we traveled extensively (more pins in the world map), became grandparents courtesy of my two sons (the grandchildren count is currently 7), and spend free time at our Green Mountain retreat. In August of 2008 Sandy approached me with the idea of adoption as a result of her growing relationship with a 13 year old Sudanese refugee boy, Abdul (soon to become Abraham) whom she had met during her layovers in Ghana. The process is almost complete and we look forward to our new life adventure and many more world destinations.
