My father-in-law, Roy john Herter, with his betrothed after returning from Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944. After taking out a machine nest he had the bad fortune to step on an anti-tank mine, leaving him without his right leg.
Would have been the 42nd anniversary today.
The night before D-Day they were visited by British Field Marshall Montgomery, who placed his hand on his shoulder and said" That Big Red One that you wear on your shoulder patch means you shall be my first wave."
The gent in this photo was my father-in-law. He was in the first row of the first wave at Omaha, June 6th 1944. When the gate of his landing craft lowered, both men on either side of him received fatal bullets to the head.
