Chip's Story

Most of my classmates knew me as Herb Curtis, Chip is my nickname. After high school, I worked a few months for Continental Can in NT. Dec 68 joined the Air Force, trained as an aircraft mechanic. First assignment out of tech school was Hurlburt Field, FL. T-28 fighter trainer aircraft. There ran into Dave Monteleone. After 6 months there I had orders to Bien Hoa AB, Vietnam launch and recovering O-2A Forward Air Controllers (FACs).. Sitting in the NCO Club at Binh Thuy AB on the Mekong, in walked Jack Saunders, NT classmate (Class of 69) and a team mate on the NT Soccer team. Returning from Vietnam, I met my wife, Ellen Woods (Kenmore East). Next assignment was at Norton AFB San Bernardino, CA. I was lucky to be one of the several airmen that worked to fix the first C-141A to arrive in Hanoi to pick up the POWs, then onto RAF Mildenhall, England, UK mechanic and flying chrew chief on EC-135H Flying Command Post aircraft. In the barracks day room, met Dave Brocious, another NT grad. There we were blessed with two daughters. Returned state side to Loring AFB. Maine (boy, we thought NT winters were co...Expand for more
ld!) Crew Chief then maintenance flight line supervisor on B-52G.. Last Air Force Assignment was Scott AFB, IL where I flew as a flight mechanic on the C-140A - Combat Flight Inspection (CFIN) aircraft, retired with 20 years service. Worked as an aircraft mechanic for corporate jets, returned to school on GI bill, obtained a BS in Industrial Technology and was hired by McDonnel Douglas/Boeing. While working, obtained a MS in Aviation Safety. Worked a few years in the System Safety Dept. then offered a manager position in Dallas, TX. (here is where I learned to fly a hot air balloon), I received a certification as an Air Safety Investigator in 2005, retired from Boeing in April 2018 after 21 years. When my wife, Ellen retired, we decided to move once again, this time to be closer to our Grandsons. We now live in a large 4 bedroom house (we want relatives and friends to visit) on the south side of Bloomington Indiana. Eagle Pointe Golf Course is a 5 min drive away and Lake Monroe, (largest lake in Indiana) is 15 min away. Indiana University is a short drive from here on the north side of Bloomington.
