Herb's Story
Greetings from the class dork of '68!! Ha! -you're not laughing! Anyway, my family left Ft. Knox in October of 1970 and eventually ended up in Glasgow,KY. I was graduated from Eastern KY Univ. in May of '72 with a B.S. degree with a major in chemistry. I had a low draft lottery number so I didn't even bother looking for a job. I got drafted as it turned out the day before the draft ended--December 26, 1972--Merry Christmas!! Oh, boy I get to go back to Ft. Knox! Do you know what the biggest problem with the draft was? Getting sent to Vietnam? Nope; haircuts! Nobody wanted a skinhead haircut!! I kid you not! Speaking of haircuts--a funny story--but not at the time! We were in a classroom in basic training, and the head drill sargent announced "And after the class we're gonna march down to the barber shop!" Everyone started rubbing his head like ,Man is this trip necessary? No one's hair was even a qua...Expand for more
rter of an inch long! Then he said "Don't rub your g------- head; all that s--- comes off!" Anyway I got sent to Edgewood Arsenal MD right on the Chesapeake Bay. I did a lot of traveling around the country-North Dakota to the anti- ballistic missle site, and I spent a lot of time in Denver at the Rocky Mtn Arsenal where they were getting rid of nerve gas. We had to test the smokestacks for pollutants. Well, then I got out of the Army in Nov of 74. I got a job at a small lab in Clarksville, IN in Jan of 75 and worked there for over 28 years. I am retired and wasting my life savings on junk I don't need. I never married--I'll bet that's a shock! Ha! I have several girl friends but no girlfriend. Or should I say women friends! I gotta quit for now. It's taken me forever to type out this stuff! As soon as I figure out how to do it I'll post a photo--I've done it before--not that I want anybody to see it!!
