Herb's Story

"Where did the time go? How could it be that long ago? We remember it so well, Oh the stories we could tell. Where did the time go?" - Poco It certainly has gone - its now been almost 50 years since the class of '64 departed Behrman for that larger world awaiting us.. Here's a quick version of what I 've been up to since '64. Basically I was AFA (away from Algiers) from '64 to '94. - College, took me 5 years and two colleges (Furman University - Greenville, SC and USL), but I finally got that Bachelor of Science degree - majored in General Business. - Work, had to leave the state after college to get a job. No one in Louisiana wanted to hire me - I was draft material (Uncle Sam, not the NFL or NBA). I went to work for Gulf States Utilities Company in Beaumont, Texas on 7/1/69. GSU was a electric and gas utility serving Southeast Texas and south Louisiana over to Gonzales. I got married to Becky Baker, a prairie Cajun from near Lake Charles who I met at USL, in May of 1970. Here it is more than 40 years later and we're still together - she's my best friend and has been a re...Expand for more
al blessing to me. Her crawfish etoufee is absolutely the BEST. Military - Then my Uncle Sam did get me in Sept 1970 and I was in the Army for almost 3 years - 2 years in Frankfurt, Germany, where our oldest son Billy was born and I got to meet up with some distant cousins and learned to speak a little German. During our stay in Germany, Becky and I also entered into a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and He has brought us thru many trials and snares, as the hymn says. He has made all the difference in our lives. Work again - back to GSU until 1994 (our younger son Richard was born during this time), when Entergy purchased the company and brought some of us back to New Orleans. We ended up buying a house in Algiers, right off the River Road, in a new development on Mr. DeBattista's old tomato farm. Its been great being back after all the years away. I retired from Entergy in March 2008 and tried to stayed retired but that didn't work out and I've been working part-time doing accounting and financial reporting at Gulf Coast Bank and Trust for almost 6 years now.

Who says we have no fall color in South Louisiana? It just takes a little longer to kick into gear; like until Fall is just about over. Red Oaks along Manhattan in Harvey living up to their name yesterday!
Becky planted caladium bulbs in the front beds back in March. Looks like they all came up along with some volunteers from last year.
Jupiter-Saturn conjunction seen from Federal City (old Naval Base), Algiers this evening about 6:30. Conjunction is right above Harriet Tubman (previously Adolph Meyer) Elementary. Not as impressive as I had hoped. I thi

Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow started blooming a little later than normal this year, probably due to the February cold snap, but it's going great guns now!
Corn in our plot at the Federal City Community Garden is starting to tassel. I think I planted the seed the last week in February, shortly after the big cold spell. I've planted that early a number of other times, but I d
My okra forest at the Federal City Community Garden on the old Algiers Naval Base. Plants are growing about half a foot a week and I'm picking lots of okra!
