Herb's Story

Life Divorced. No children. School I was the guy running the chain gang at the football games. College Attended University of North Dakota 1968-1972. Announcer for University of North Dakota radio station KFJM. Captain of the ROTC .22 caliber indoor target rifle team. B.S. Business Administration. Workplace Following separation from active duty in the Army, I worked for Burns & Roe Engineering as an Administrative Assistant. I spent my off hours getting my Flight Instructor certification. Left that for a job as a copilot on a Twin Otter for Seaplane Shuttle Transport, Inc. in New York flying FEDEX mail. Left that for a full time instructor position at Linden, New Jersey for about a year. Hired on with Southern Jersey Airways, Inc. in Atlantic City, NJ as a copilot in 1979. Promoted to captain on the Twin Otter in 1980. Also, flew for three years as a copilot on the deHavilland Dash 7. Hired by Domino's Pizza, Inc. in Ann Arbor, Michigan in October 1986 as a corporate pilot on the Twin Otter and Convair 580. Furloughed in 1988. 988. The first winter there, the temperature went to -30 F. I have been based in Detroit since 1989. Hired as Captain on the Fokker F.27 turbo-prop to open the new Detroit crew base in 1989. Served 4 years on the Fokker and transitioned to Captain on the deHavilland Dash 8 in August 1992. I flew the Dash 8 until the arrival of the Britsh Aerospace AVRO146-RJ85 passenger jet in March 1998. Things got rough for Mesaba Airlines and I stepped down to the Saab 340 (36-pax)for about 9 months. Today a fly the 76 seat Canadair CRJ-900 regional jet. I fly mostly around the Great Lakes, Mississippi and Ohio Valley. View the system map in my photo gallery. I retired from airline service in September 2014. Military ROTC commission to US Army Signal Corps. Attended Signal Officer Basic Course #16 at Ft. Gordon, GA 1/73 to 3/73. Attended Communications Center Operations Course #4 at Ft. Gordon, GA on 4/73.Three years active duty at Ft. Bragg, NC. Promoted to Captain while in Army Standby Reserve. Completed six more years of reserve duty following separation from active duty in 1976. Resigned after 1981.
