Herman's Story
I'll be frank and Herman. Anybody that remembers me remembers a funny yet intense personality. Whenever I joined a team or club or somethiing, I could walk away after events thinking I did my best. That inner drive, took me into teaching ,coaching, radio announcing ,off camera stints at a couple of TV stations and finally the classroom as a teacher. After giving people like Mr. Fluckey. and Joe Sandoval fits my senior year. I became who they were. I began to pick up young people in and out of trouble. Something worked because my children have multiple higher education and Law degrees. And one is also a Pastor and Chaplain own. I thank God for guiding me from the projects to where I am today. Many times I should have died but God kept giving me one more day. So I serve him now and as crazy as it sounds, I've literally traveled three hundred and sixty degrees from a five year old Christian convert in the middle of the civil rights movement in Jackson, Miss, to a born again ...Expand for more
Christian today. If you went to West you remember our small (Band of Bros,) CARRYING EVERY WEAPON WE NEEDED TO PROTECT OURSELVES ON A DAILY BASIS. I lived to see another day many times as we walked home from sports practice. Life was like gangs but we were in cliques in the old days.
I worked in the Colorado Prisons(YOS) Program for a year and many a young kid called me OG. Pray for our children and our old high school. Its crazy out there folks. Go spend some time during and after school. Somebody gave me a chance and opportunity was all I needed to do what my surroundings called the impossible. Stubbornness refocused can be a powerful tool in the success of a child. Give something back! Many other schools have faithful crowds and supporters. In fact I've been to games were several generations sat in a row, screaming for granchildren and neighbors children. You'd be suprised how far a little support matters to a school and its students. Yeah .I went to West High and I'm proud!
