Hilary Schramm:

CLASS OF 1972
La crescenta, CA

Hilary's Story

As time passes I find the need to reflect. I remember a time when I thought I would never get out of school, and now how much more I would appreciate all those history classes. How I should have voiced my opinions more. I look back on my mothers passing and wonder what would I have done if I had been there. Would I have been frozen in fear or jumped in and done abdominal thrusts. I guess only God knows what I would have done. I can mark that day in time as having a new, fresh outlook on life, and at least to me, a newer appreciation of those around me and the world around me. That moment in time changed my life and many things that were important to me and my way of life took on a new perspective. Now with the kids grown, not necessarily matured, but grown, in college, I am waiting to enjoy the empty nest, the quiet empty nest. Waiting for college to start this fall, and then ahhh. Kids at school in Fullerton, husband at work in Houston and me here in Shadow Hills. As many of you know from reading my profile on falcons.com I have had the opportunity to experience the life of one who has had two different types of cancer, unrelated to eachother, and both resistant to chemotherapy. I would not wish cancer upon anyone but am thankful that I have had the opportunity to experience this aspect of me growing in my life experiences and making a decision on how to proceed in this life. Malignant melanoma, take it out, do follow up, cannot do chemo until it spreads, if it ever does. Done! Six years later, wow, leiomyosarcoma or cancer of the smooth muscles. Again, no chemo until it ...Expand for more
spreads. And, the last two years in a wheelchair have done nothing for the figure. Having been anorexic in the early 80's I have more than recovered and went the "other way" gaining back plus. The wheelchair makes it all look "so lovely" HA! Hopefully I will be learning to walk this summer. Today I sit here writing, albiet, one legged or more accurately 1 and 1/3 legged. I work at a private Christian school that has gone through many financial changes this year and along with that comes job changes, but at least I still have a job, working with kids which I love. And thus, I am currently, the past 21 years, living in Shadow Hills. Two daughters, 21 and 18, both in college and beautiful. Life is a great ride, the truest trip of a lifetime. Take time to love deeply, be genuine, appreciate those around you and tell them they are appreciated, think before you speak, get in touch with old friends, and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy... Thanks to all who made it to the 35th! and thanks also to those who got up to the dance floor to dance "The Stump". I am sorry that some of you were, not offended but perhaps uncomfortable with the idea of doing the stump dance with me, but here's the deal... I WILL NOT LET MY CIRCUMSTANCES AND ONE LEG KEEP ME FROM ENJOYING MYSELF AND MY FRIENDS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. When you are faced with a life threatening disease you realize you have to live for today, have fun, enjoy friends, today.. you may not have a tomorrow, and if tomorrow does come I do not want to spend it reflecting on time gone by and not spent to the fullest. Take care, be healthy and love somebody
