Peter's Story
I attended grades1-12 at San Francisco Schools including Roosevelt Jr High and Washington High. I disliked Shakespeare book reports enough that my parents were worried that I might drop out. But thanks to Principal Schmaelze, I gave up what supposedly was a promising music career (trombone) and had enough credits to graduate from summer school with a GWHS diploma. I then enrolled at SF City College for a year, became a radio announcer, and worked for KPOD, KUTI, KKAR, KSRO, WLMD and KPNW, mostly using the name Pete Hayes. I worked as an “engineer” at both KKHI and KYA in the summer of ’63, before going to KSRO, Santa Rosa, where I was drafted. I spent most of my 2 years military career announcing M-O-R and Elevator Music programs for the 1st/2nd Recruiting districts at Ft. Meade, MD. Columbia Records for pressing and those records were mailed to NE radio stations. The Army actually allowed me to moonlight at a Laurel, MD radio station as an announcer, where I stayed a year more and married wife #1, who 10 years later “fired me” when I was working at KPNW, Eugene. I was a single dad for 4 years and had switched to being a tech for Oregon Public Broadcasting by 1982 when I married the love of my life, Janine. I was employed by OPB (the Oregon version of KQED) for 31 years until retiring at age 68. Janine passed away in 2022, a few months shy of our 40th anniversary. Fortunately, my daughter and her boyfriend had moved in to help us 2 old farts in 2019. I don’t do much interesting these days, but enjoy Polar Plunges/Swims. I had the biggest crush on Janet J. at Roosevelt and GWHS summer school, but at that time, who could compete with Elvis??
