Hollis's Story

I was at Allendale from kindergarten almost all the way through 6th grade, when my family moved to Australia-- Western Australia! I missed all of you! It was very different from Pasadena from a child's viewpoint. School involved a lot of memorizing, the food was unusual (meat pies were big) and we wore uniforms to public school. In retrospect I adjusted ok, it was just very different, and I couldn't seem to keep in touch with old friends. There were these very thin letters they called aerogrammes.... I was glad when we moved back, this time to Hawai`i. Life was pretty good from a teenage perspective: swimming, surfing, going to school. I guess the food was different in Hawai1i too, but being older now it seemed just fine with me (lomi salmon, poke, sushi -- all good). I was on the swim team, but eventually couldn't manage to come in third or better, so dropped out of swimming. Continued with, French, I guess and something called Pacific and Asian Affairs Council, wrote some bad poetry.. Over the years I graduated from the University of Hawai`i with a BA (honors) in economics and an MBA. ...Expand for more
Married my husband, Chris Parsons (I didn't change my name, long story). Moved to Washington DC and back to Hawaii, had two kids, and then our lives changed. Our daughter pressed hard for us to go to church and we chose a nearby Episcopal church. Soon enough I felt a call to ordained ministry, and eventually our family was in Berkeley where I went to seminary and Chris went to law school. Then back to Hawaii where I was ordained an episcopal priest (who would have ever guessed?) and Chris passed the Hawaii Bar exam. Finished raising our kids, daughter got married, son at the University of Arkansas and then came a call to Colorado. I'm now at St. Matthew's in Grand Junction and Chris has passed the Colorado Bar. After years of tropical weather we're experiencing very cold winters and very hot summers. Despite this, Colorado is take-your-breath away beautiful and the people are good. In closing, let me apologize for getting out of touch with my good friends. I wish I had been more together. God bless the bunch of you, unless you're atheists, in which case, just know I'm thinking of you.
