Holly's Story
I left High School early and graduated from PLU in 1974, two years early. My jobs were mostly minimum wage, but those must have been a few of the happiest years of my life....having nothing, saving, and buying the most meager of luxuries because I saved.
I joined the military after some stressful personal events, and felt safe, did well. I retired in 1998 as a LCDR, served in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Ford Island, Hawaii; Adak, Alaska; Washington D.C.; Stuttgart, Germany; Macon, Georgia; Little Creek, VA; and Washington D.C. again. I was immediately hired to serve the Navy as a civilian investigator of fraud, waste and abuse of authority. I transferred a couple times to different commands, and am now the Privacy Officer for the Chief of Naval Research. In 2004, I spent six months in Iraq after the war broke out. ty. We worked very long hours, and it was easy to sleep through the sounds of the RPGs (Rocket Propelled Grenades). I earned medals as expert rifleman and pistolman, so I could carry a weapon but chose not to. I didn't leave the green zone, so it wasn't needed.
In April, 2007, the older of my two daughters was murdered at Virginia Tech by an insane gunman who took the lives of 31 others and himself. My life changed forever. One thing I know for sure is that when something like this happens to you, you need to find a way to heal or it will kill you. I'm finding my way through staying as busy as possible. I am teaching at night; art classes to adults through the Fairfax County Public School system. I truly enjoy my students and hope to do even more teaching when I retire from Federal Government service in a few years.
Other than all that, my life has been uneventful!
