Homer's Story

Life After graduation, I moved to Florida with my parents. After enlisting in the US Air Force (with classmate Ken Danser) and spending 8 years in the Far East and the southern US, I left the AF in 1964. I traveled around the US (Tulsa, New Orleans, Jersey Shore) celebrating my bachelorhood untill 1969 when I married Edna in a simple ceremony in Dallas, Pa. (Little "D"!) We lived in Oakland, NJ (far north Jersey) for several years with our daughter Kimberly. I was, for a time, the President of the Chamber of Commerce for Oakland. We owned a consumer Electronics sales and service store. One night I slipped on the ice and lay unconcious in the driveway for some time. I survived just fine, but vowed I would not live where I could die of exposure in my own driveway! So, goodbye Jersey, and Hello California! We lived in Huntington Beach, California from 1977 until 1980. This is where I joined a computer firm, Four Phase Systems, and my career in life was finally set (About time!). We were transfered to Dallas, Texas in 1980 where we remained until Dec 31 1999. In 1985 I left Four Phase and Joined Tandem Computers. I served as an Instructor and a Regional Communication Specialist. A great company to work for.....but the wheels came off after they fired the founder some 11 years later..... I still meet and email many of the employees of this wonderful company. We raised one daughter, Kimberly. She was her High School Valedictorian in Keller, Texas, and went on to get her BA (Texas A&M) and two masters degrees (Bowling Green & North Texas State). I was determined that she would have the opportunities that I, perhaps, had lacked. She was a Business Implementor for a Celluar/Internet company. In 1996 I left Tandem and joined a voice control company that shall remain nameless... I was happily recruited by Applied Communications Inc (a Tandem partner) just 9 months later and joined them as a Sales Analyst. I flew all over the country putting on Presentations, both product and business implementation. All of the US, Canada, Mexico and Colombia was my territory. They were a very fine company. I worked there for 5 years. I retired, reluctantly, in April 2001. Diabetes got me. Couldn't go-go-go anymore. We moved to N Ft Myers, Florida in Jan 2001. Kimberly passed away on Jan 9, 2006 from complications of Pneumonia in the hospital in Dallas. It ripped my heart out. She was Daddy's girl. I still cry and I guess I always will. Edna and I are both retired now. Edna has dementia. Primarily caused IMO from the trauma of her daughters death. There is no cure and no way to arrest the disease that each day takes a little more of my beloved Edna away. It is terrible to experience "the long goodbye". EDIT: Edna was diagnosed with Inoperable, untreatable lymphoma of the brain on July 22, 2010. She passed quietly into the hands of her God on August 17th, 2010. She is with her daughter now. In one way, it was a blessing...but I still wish I had my babe back. After 5 years I have returned to some level of normalcy. As a matter of fact I got married again....in May of 2017 to a wonderful girl from Oklahoma! We live in N Ft Myers in the winter time and Oklahoma in the summer. Our home in Oklahoma is in Ardmore....a mere 75 miles from where I spent many years in Texas. I r...Expand for more
egularly correspond with several classmates and wish that you would contact us too. School I was lucky enough to be born at the right time in our country. I celebrated the fabulous 50's by graduating from Rancocas Valley High School, Mt Holly, NJ, in 1956. What a great life! We had the greatest guys, the most beautiful girls, and the best music of any era! I was a member, and captain, of the cross country team and won my letter in track as a freshman. I still see/correspond with Coach Hoagland these many years later.(Ray has pulled back and no longer has an email) Although not a teacher, per se, he did help teach me to be a man. Thank you Ray! The most important teacher in my life, and there were several, was Mr DeStefano. When he arrived in Mt Holly he was appalled at the limited vocabulary of me and my peers, so he instituted a vocabulary program. Each day he would give us 3 new words, and we would be expected to memorize the meaning and spelling of these words. He did test us! As fate (and finances) would have it, I never went to college. But many people assumed I did because of my expanded vocabulary. Thank you Mr D! I took 5 years to go through HS because i quit school in my Junior year. After only a few months in the work force, I hustled back to High School to retake my junior year (with much higher grades I might add!) because i didn't want to spend my life at manual labor. The 50s were a wonderful time! And the people were outstanding. Still are. You people will never know how much I appreciate you. Military Joined USAF in Sep 56. Basic at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Electronics Technical Training at Scott Field, Belleville, Illinois-30452B, Ground Radio Repairman, first assignment 1961st AACS in the Philippine Islands. Stationed at Clark Field then did some time at Camp O'Donnell and Poro Point also in the Philippines. Then 727th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This was the year of my 21st birthday (1959) It was a magical time to be 21.... at a magical place. On to Taiwan in 1960.. Spent most of my time out on the island of Magung. This was a forward missile guidance site of the 868th Tactical Missile Squadron. Our targets were 7 Chinese missile sites. Their target was us..... From Taiwan I went to Maxwell AFB which was OK for the first 2 years.......... and then got real bad. Through this time, from 1958 to 1964, I made 11 TDY trips to Vietnam. Total time in country was 21 months. I was temporarily assigned to MAAG & MAC-V and spent nearly all my time in the field with the ARVN (Army of Vietnam) . I was an "advisor" and only was in "combat" on a few occasions. On one of those occasions in 1964, I lost my best buddy at the time, S/Sgt "Dewey" Baker. Got out of the USAF in June of 1964 after 8 years served. I never questioned the war. I was a soldier. I did what my Country asked me to do. But I will never forget, or forgive, the so called "Americans" that blamed the war on me and my brothers. Like everybody I have had some good times and bad. But I am still optimistic about life and am enjoying retirement and my late life Marriage to Bobbie Felknor. We currently have a summer home in Ardmore Oklahoma and a winter home in Homosassa Florida. Life is good. Short...but good.
