Howard's Story

More about Howard: "Martin graduated from South Habersham High School in Cornelia Georgia in 1960. He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology where he earned a BS in textiles in 1964 and an MS in textiles in 1965. He was commissioned as an officer in the US Army, Infantry, and served with the 1/7 Cavalry, First Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in Vietnam 1966 - 1967. His decorations included the Bronze Star, Air Medal, and the Combat Infantry Badge. He was honorably discharged with the rank of First Lieutenant.
He was employed by Tennessee Eastman Company/Eastman Chemical Company Kingsport, TN from June 1968 through August 1997 holding various management positions in research, development, manufacturing, human resources and as an organizational design/development consultant. He earned an MBA from ETSU in 1977.

ed as Sunday school teacher, Deacon and Elder. He was commissioned by Holston Presbytery as a Commissioned Lay Pastor in 1985 and served various churches in the presbytery for more than a dozen years. He retired from Eastman in August of 1997 and enrolled in Union Theological Seminary & Presbyterian School of Education in January of 1998. He was awarded the Master of Divinity degree there in May, 2000 and was ordained as Minister of Word and Sacrament in June of 2001 when he was called to serve as Pastor of Magill Memorial Presbyterian Church in Roan Mountain, TN. He was awarded a full fellowship by Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, VA to work on his doctorate in 2004. He completed that work and was awarded the Doctor of Ministry degree in May of 2007.
He and his wife, Anne, were married on April 12, 1966. They have two daughters, Beth Layland of Sydney, Australia, and Jenny Wilke of Frisco, Texas. Each daughter has blessed them with two grandsons, Andrew and James Martin in Sydney, and Christian and Chandler in Texas/Louisiana. Anne taught computer literacy for middle-school students in Sullivan County for many years.
Martin is an avid outdoorsman, and particularly enjoys hunting and fishing. He has pursued those sports all across the US, including Alaska, and in Australia, and Africa. But his primary interests are spending time with his wife and his “children” (adult and juvenile), and in his church work.".
