Howard's Story

Life Ladies and Gentlemen, Here is the low down on me for those that care. I am married to a wonderful women named LaRonda and, we have to beautiful children. My son Isiah is five years old and our second child, Alicia is three years old. We live in Fort Benning, Georgia in a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, town house on post. Columbus is the city that lays next to Fort Benning and we about 100 miles south of Atlanta, GA, which is quite nice as far as entertainment is concerned. I have been married now for 14 years and don't regret a day of being married to my beautiful wife and soulmate. We have a dog named Dusty but, he lives with my wife's parents in OKC. He use to be a house dog but now he is a yard dog. My wife is a house wife and is in the Army Reserves for 17 years now. We both attended the same middle school and high school in OKC; however, we did not meet formally until we both had graduated and joined the military. That is the down and dirty for now. Updates to follow when necessary. School Wow, where do I begin to tell you all about my high school experience. How about the beginning? I started high school at Henry Ford in Detroit, Michigan as a freshmen and only spent one year there. That was a very unstable time for me because I bounce back and forth with my living arrangements. At times I lived with my aunt and other times with my mom in apartment in Detroit. I only knew a few kids from Taft middle school and neighborhood friends from my aunts house. My grades suffered due to a lot of things but the bottom line is I didn't care about school much at this time. School was never hard for me but I was going through some tuff times and had know one to really help with them. My only saving grace was my interest in basketball. Basketball kept the fire burning inside because I want to be the best I could be at it. I tried out for the team but I was truly out of my league. I had heart but I was shy and intimidated and my skills hadn't even begun to develop. Basically, because I had a late start on liking and learning the game at a competitive level. Luckily, I transfered to Southfield high my sophmore year and had a much more stable life at this time. I jumped right into my situation with my grades improving to a "B" average and making the JV team basketball team. I tried out for the varsity but I still hadn't got out of my shell and developed that killer instinct. The friendships I developed at Southfield have withstand the years over time. As far as crushes are concerned I had many probably too many to mention. After, two years at Southfield I made a major decision which pretty much changed my life for the better. I changed schools after having a good summer playing basketball at camp, summer league and streetball. My confidence was extremely high and I thought the only chance for me to shine was to change school for my last year. I moved back to OKC with my dad and went to Star Spencer High home of the Bobcats. Some may ask why did you do that your senior year. Several reasons: Southfield was a track and football school and don't forget other on the team already were starting and established under the current coach. Oh, by the way the coach sucked ass trying to make us into a team like the Celtics when everybody new we were more like the Lakers (Run and Gun). The coach at Star pretty much assured me I would get a scholarship and play a lot if not start. The school was a basketball school and always made it to state or the playoffs. Coaches from big name schools were always at our practices and we...Expand for more
even traveled to different states for invitational tournaments. The school was not hard for me academically because I had just come from Southfield which always excelled in that department. To end this story I graduated and got a scholarship to play at Detroit Jordan a very small college on Grand River. It was a NAIA level school and I ended up redshirting because I injured my shooting hand in a non-sport relative accident. Then I dropped out of school to help my moms and myself out a home. Basketball dreams got put on hold, I thought just temporary but the Lord had other plans. Believe me I have no regrets. Everything happens for a reason and I believe it was all the right ones. College College for me was definitely not the typical scene thing you see on MTV that is for sure. After dropping out of college for about 3 years; I enrolled at a junior college in OKC called Rose State. I had just finished Basic Training and AIT for the Air Force Reserve and was focused on getting my Associates degree in something. I went between being a Physical Therapist, Lawyer, Medical Doctor, building designer, etc. I finally settle on criminal justice which sparked a interest in me from the start. Something about the law kept me motivated to succeed in the field. I messed around at Rose for longer then I wanted due to being in the Reserves. After around 3 1/2 years I graduated with honors and transfered to the University of Central Oklahoma. One thing I failed to mention is that I held between one and two full time jobs while at Rose. Did some travelling while in the reserves and shared a apartment with a dude I was in the reserves with at the time. Okay, yeah I did a little bit of partying too but not nearly as much as some of my friends. I was definitely on my own time line to finish my degree, not a four to five year plan. I also met my wife around this time. At this time I was ready to settle down and hang up my player shoes for a real serious relationship. We ended up shacking up at one of my dad's houses we rented. I had to check out the merchandise before I brought it, if you know what I mean. Things worked out for the best and we married in JULY 95 and have never looked back. Well, maybe just a little, just kidding babe. I ended up joining Army ROTC to get my commisison as a LT on active duty in the Infantry. I also finished my degree in Criminal Justice, on the honor roll the whole way through with know loans to repay. When on active duty in 2000 and begun my training at Fort Benning, Georgia. As of this year I am currently working on my Masters in Business Administration at the University of Grantham, which is a online school. God welling I will be finished around the fall of next year. I always wanted to be a NBA basketball player when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, they were not disappointed in what I became. I run, lift weights, talk about it, read, or take a drive. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have flexibility, some level of control, and good leadership to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My hero is my dad and my inspiration comes from my family and close friends. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Derrick Roberts and Mike O'neal, because they both influence me as a teenager. Improving in my marriage, business knowledge, financial intelligence, and becoming closer to God. That they are not me or my wife but a apart of us. I've learned to be more patient, open minded, and to really listen to them.
