Howard's Story
Did a BA (Political Science) at Glendon College and collected postgrad degrees in Political Science from the University of Hawai'i and York. and also in history and philosophy of education from the University of Toronto.
Been teaching for the last 57 years - University of Hawai'i, York University, Seneca College, Kapiolani Community College, Hawai'i Pacific University plus lecturing at places like McMaster, Queen's, University of Toronto and similar institutions from coast (St. Mary's in Halifax) to coast (Capilano in Vancouver).
Been an education/research consultant for outfits such as Atomic Energy of Canada, Ltd., the Canadian Bankers Association, the Canadian Council of Forestry Ministers, SaskEnergy and the late, lamented Ontario Hydro.
Been an active trade unionist (have been an official of one sort of another with the Ontario Public Service Employees Union and was cheerfully described as a "union militant" in a history of OPSEU entitled "Don't Call Me Servant: Government Workers and Unions in Ontario - 1911-1984") on and off since 1975 and have done various jobs for organizations from the John Howard Society (prison reform) to the Canadian Centre for Victims of Torture.
Spent most of my political time working for NDP candidates provincially and federally since 1965 and for US presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy (1968), while resident in the USA. Also been something of an environmental activist (Canadian Environmental Network, Ontario Environmental Network - Biotechnology Caucus) and a community activist - president of my local homeowners association in the 1990s and President of the Coalition of Richmond Hill Ratepayers, also in the 1990s - still active as a consultant.
Been editing some journals such as "Bridges: Explorations in Science, Technology & Society" (1986-1991), "The College Quarterly" (2017-present) and "The Innovation Journal" (1998-2020) - also guest edited issues of "The Canadian Studies Bulletin" (1975), "College Canada" (1981) and "Current: The Energy Magazine for Ontario Teachers" (1992)., as well as being a regular contribut...Expand for more

Enjoying speaking at various professional meetings - from San Diego to Halifax and from Edmonton to Orlando. with multiple engagements in Winnipeg and Kansas City in between.
Writing a lot. (most recent books include "Discourse and Community" - Guernica, 2007, and "Culture and Difference" - Guernica, 2011), "Soft Science: Introduction to Sociology - Kendall Hunt, 2021), plus recent chapters in books such from an anthology on the Canadian writer, "Nino Ricci" (2016) and "Violence in Canada (2016), to "Postsecondary Education in Transition" (2017), "Emerging Trends in Cyber Ethics and Distance Education" (2018), "Critical Theory and Transformative Learning" (2018) and "Educational Leadership: Perspectives, Management and Challenges" (2020), plus over 600 articles, reviews, etc. in such journals as the "Adult and Vocational Education Today," the "Canadian Review of Sociology and Anthropology," "Canadian Studies Bulletin," "College Canada," "Emergency Librarian," "Journal of the Canadian Association of Community Colleges," "Morning Watch: Educational & Social Analysis," "Po'okela," "Popular Music and Society," the "Review of Radical Political Economics," "Socialist Studies Bulletin," "Working Teacher," etc., etc. ... plus hundreds of minor contributions to the "Globe and Mail," the "Honolulu Star-Bulletin," the "Kamloops Daily News," the "New York Times - online," the "Toronto Star," the "Village Voice," CBC Radio and CTV television and the far-famed KPOI-FM and KNDI-FM in Honolulu..
Traveling a little pre-pandemic - mostly now just visiting with American friends most in Vermont, Ohio, and Hawai'i as often as possible - having visited, lived and worked there often since 1967.
Have a daughter who did an MSc at Western, a Master's in Public Health at U of T before graduating from law school in 2016 and is now working with the Auditor General's office in a Maritime provincial capital..
Otherwise, still vertical and tilted forward.
