Howard's Story
Life
After high school I joined the U.S. Air Force. I went through Boot Camp in Lackland AFB, San Antonio TX, I did my "munitions training" at Lowrey AFB CO, My 1st assignment was in Hahn Germany, and then George AFB, Victorville CA. I reached the rank of "Sergeant" and was discharged after my time was up.
I went to work offshore with then "Brown and Root", I went to Brazil and Trinidad with the company, I quit after 2 1/2 yrs. I tended bar for a while and I drove an 18 wheeler. Those jobs were boring.
I reenlisted in the Air Force. Was stationed at Nellis AFB, Las Vegas NV, then went to Kunsan AB Republic of Korea, (S.Korea), from there I went to Royal Air Force Base (RAF) Bentwaters, United Kingdom ,(England). I was pulling a Temporary Duty Assignment up above the Artic Circle in Norway and caught a parasite which turned to Pnumonia, I was Evacuated on a Medical Transport out of England back to San Antonio TX, spent 3 m...Expand for more
onths in an Air Force hospital. I was finally "Medically Retired" at the rank of Staff Sergeant from the Air Force, with a 60% disability.
I retired from the Air Force after almost 11 yrs of service and was decorated 2 times for Meritorious Service, (Air Force Commendation Medal and Air Force Achievement Medal) and recieved a "Campaign Medal" for service in S.Korea. (Korea Defense Service Medal).
I went to college on a rehab program sponsered by the Veterans Administration and recieved a degree in electronics and worked for a communications outfit traveling all over the U.S. Because of my health I had to retire from that job after 7 yrs. Now I live on a "Veterans Disability Pension" with a rating of 100% disability. So now I do not work anymore and retirement sucks if you can't do anything.
I am currently a member of the "Disabled American Veterans" (DAV), The "Veterans of Foreign Wars" (VFW), and the "American Legion".
