Howard's Story
After leaving Junction City at the end of my sophomore year, I attended the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, TX my junior year.
Finished high school at Fort Campbell High School in Ft. Campbell Ky. Was a National Merit Scholarship finalist and won an appointment to the Naval Academy.
Went to USNA, 33rd Company, Class of 85. Majored in Political Science and working on the Hop Committee at weekend dances. Discovered I should have paid more attention in math classes when I was asked to leave at the end of my junior year after a less than stellar academic performance.
Decided to show them by enlisting in the Marine Corps and getting my commission the hard way. Got married. Went back to school at night to finish my Computer Science degree at National University. After getting my degree and lining up for OCS, was medically discharged due to injuries received in an argument with my parachute (I wanted it to stay open, it didnÂt want to).
Got a job with the local telecom division of Sprint in Pennsylvania managing their internal data networks and desktops. In 1995, started SprintÂ's first consumer ISP as an internal new business start-up. A year...Expand for more
later rolled that project into a larger one called Sprint Internet Passport to provide consumer Internet services nationally. Moved to Kansas City. Had a son, James, in 1997
After two years, Passport was sold and I moved to SprintÂs integrated broadband consumer product, Sprint ION. Managed the product platform for ION. Got divorced in 2000. Met a beautiful but dangerous Bolivian named Blanca with whom I now spend my time. In October, 2001, Sprint killed ION and I joined 2100 others in the first of many lay-offs.
I then spent 2 years providing technology consulting and other assorted business services and 18 months with a cable company in upstate NY, where I was responsible for voice strategy for their Digital Phone product.
I returned to Kansas City and Sprint in 2006, managing strategy and planning for their Cable VoIP business. Currently I do the same for Sprint's Wholesale business unit.
Spend my free time mucking around in the indie film community here, writing screenplays, and trying to get back in shape to play rugby again (played for Camp Lejeune for three years).
That's my story, There are many others like it, but this one is mine...
