Howard's Story
Life
My years at Verdugo became "stepping stones" for my continued interests and future vocation. I attended Cal State Northridge, received a BA in Art and went on to earn a teaching credential. I taught for 2 1/2 years at Maclay Junior High in Pacoima (I even taught one summer at VHHS in the very same room that I had previously "raised hell in" as a fledgling artist) before entering the Air Force in 1970. In the Air Force, I served as an illustrator, motion picture photographer, and an educational specialist. While in the Air Force, I was able to complete an MS from USC that I started on before entering the service. Following the Air Force, I took a position at the University of Texas in Odessa, TX, where I was media production coordinator for the school's learning resources center. In 1974, I attended the University of Texas at Austin, as both a post graduate student and instructor, and did advanced coursework in art, radio-TV-film, and educational technology.
In 1978, I left UT to take an assistant professorship at Middle Tennessee State University at Murfreesboro. I taught both graduate and undergraduate classes in art production and teaching methods for prospective teaching candidates. I also started a wood design ...Expand for more
business and travelled to a good part of the southeastern United States merchandising and promoting my art. In 1986, I returned to California to teach art in the Sacramento, CA area. After 14 years of teaching as an Elementary Art Specialist, I took a couple of years off, to do freelance work in events videography and photographic documentation. In 2000. I returned to teaching at the HS level in Elk Grove, Ca, (in art and computer graphics) where I now reside. I'm now "semi-retired" but continue to teach several days a week. The high school students keep me "young" and although they can be a challenge, it's great fun to be around them! I continue my work as a graphic artist and videographer on a part time basis, and love to take weekend trips to the Sierras or the SF bay area to find "adventure and art!" I also do "volunteer" photographic production work for the local SPCA and love being around all of the "critters*. On weekends, for fun, I "rob" trains and do old west reenactment shows with several old west reenactment groups in the Sacramento-San Joaquin area.
No kids, no grandkids...just beagles...five to be exact! I expect to wake up one morning with a wet nose and long floppy ears, but it hasn't happened yet!
