Howard's Story
Life
In 1991, I married Carolyn Hahn from Iuka, Illinois. When we were married, I adopted Carolyn's cat - Aphrodite. We (Aphrodite, Carolyn and myself) currently live in Lawrenceville, Georgia (a suburb northeast of Atlanta).
We are active in church (Oak Road Lutheran of Lilburn, Georgia). Carolyn served for a long time as the chair of the Fellowship Committee. I am currently serving on the Board of Elders.
College
In 1986, I graduated from Purdue with a Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering. In 1994, I started an evening MBA program at Emory University in Atlanta. In 1997, I received my Masters of Business Administration degree from Emory. I was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma (the business honor society) also in 1997.
Workplace
In 1986, I was hired as a Management Trainee by Norfolk Southern Railroad. My headquarters were Bluefield, West Virginia in the heart of coal country. As a "flatlander", it took a while to get used to working in the "holers" (otherwise know as hollows or valleys).

I was transferred to Atlanta as a Structural Detailer for the Southeastern Region (North and South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee). It allowed me to become aquainted with real barbecue, Brunswick stew and sweet tea. Although, I have not developed a taste for grits or boiled peanuts.
In 1988, I was promoted to Assistant Engineer (railroad title for junior Bridge Designer)(still in Atlanta. Over the years, the Southeastern Region became the Eastern Region and picked up Virginia, West Virgina and Florida.
I was licensed by the State of Georgia as a Professional Engineer in 1993.
In 1996, I became an Assistant Engineer of Structures (senior Bridge Designer). Since then, I have worked on all three of Norfolk Southern's regions (Eastern, Western and Northern). Bridges that I have designed stand in Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. A contractor is currently constructing one of my designs in New Jersey.
