Hugh's Story
Life
Packing a motorcycle for camping was an adventure especially when one has never par-taken of such an activity before and my longest ride before departing was a little over two hundred miles. Running into great luck, the weather was somewhat out of character for a Texas June as cooler temperatures prevailed as I moved West playing cat and mouse with thunderstorms that meandered too and fro. The Texas high plains provided a dramatic view for many miles and if I had not known the difference would have thought that I was in the canyon lands of Utah.
Passing through canyon lands into the high plains and on into the Colorado Rockies was thrilling and yet peaceful as if an "ole" friend from a earlier time during my youth had come calling again as memories of backpacking, gazing down from 14,000' peaks, and standing in the clouds stirred memories locked away in my mind but not forgotten. It would have been nice to have experienced those memories again but better judgement prevailed and the "hum" of the 750cc motorcycle engine carried me over the Continental Divide. Arriving in Montrose late evening and soaked to the bone I was welcomed to a hot shower and a hot meal from a friend I had not seen in thirty years f...Expand for more
or any length of time, only in my passings through. Needless to say, my friend and his family took me in as a family member and for twelve short days to which I admit, hated to leave but looked forward to again seeing my own family and getting on the road.
Riding a motorcycle on the open road alone causes one to think from what I hear. However, I don't recall thinking too much as that endeavor strains the brain, probably can be attributed more to the aging process than anything. Riding alone was probably not the wisest decision but it appealed to my independent nature and being a supporter of the NRA...and a Texan...
I am looking at an 1100 cc, Honda Shadow Sabre for a little more power and speed. Figured I would venture up into the Dakotas next summer.
As I anticipated, the Sabre is sleek and swift when I need her to be, especially when I point my nose westward again this summer on I-40 of which I avoided on my previous trip. Putting her through her paces, accelerating to 110 mph was absolutely no problem. 120 and 130 mph have crossed my mind, but so far that has been the extent of it, just a passing thought.
Hmmm, let's see what is out there...I think I will put the Sabre thru her paces on I-40 to N.M.
