Life After graduating from Olivet Nazarene University, I taught elementary school for 1 yr in the Chicago area, then in 1975 I moved to the Indianapolis area and have lived here since. I met my husband here and married in 1979. I continued teaching for several years until our two boys were born. I intended to go back to teaching, but a hobby of mine since HS began to take over my life.....cake decorating. I decorated cakes out of my home and did maybe 10 - 15 weddings a year. I worked for several years for two different custom cake shops, then in 1995 decided my family was grown up enough to take the challenge and open a business of my own. It has been a challenge and delight to take something from nothing and create a thriving and reputable entity. To manage this small business, I have worked 60 - 80 hours a week for over 12 years!! We now have 12 employees and average 500+ weddings a year, plus the thousands of party cakes. We are the "destination" cake shop in a metro area of over 1 million people. Our store "Classic Cakes" has been named "Best in Indy" by Indianapolis Monthly Magazine in 1997 and again in 2002. In 2003 we were a people's choice winner in "Indianapolis Women" magazine. We have been published in many publications including the national magazine "Elegant Bride." We have done cakes for many well known people including Larry Bird, Charles Schwab Jr., Larry Brow...Expand for more
