Irene's Story

My single claim to fame while at Hayward High was being feature editor of the Haypress. Room 31 became my hangout and Miss Hawksley my favorite teacher along with Miss McStay who taught me everything there is to know about the English language. This knowlege was put to good use when I became an English teacher. After being graduated from San Jose State, I taught first grade in Monterey for a few years. I then spent a year in Germany teaching on an army post and traveling around Europe, mostly the latter. When I returned to the Monterey area, I switched to Junior high, my subjects being English and Spanish. I lived in a little cottage in Carmel with my Scotty, Thistle. It was in Monterey that I met and married Don Hazen, a student at the Naval Post Graduate School. We spent some time in Norfolk, VA, Newport, RI, and Albany, GA. Our son Shawn was born in Albany. While in Albany, I wrote a weekly column for the Albany Herald. It brought back good memories of my time on Haypress. After leaving the Navy, we went back to the Monterey area where our daughter Julie was born. Don was given an offer he couldn't refuse from Boeing so we headed to the Pacific Northwest and bought a home in Kirkland, WA. I took an evening writing class and had some humor ...Expand for more
articles published in national and local publications. Shawn and Julie were both graduated from the UW, Shawn with a major in Graphic Design and Julie with one in Sociology. In 1997, Don suffered a fatal heart attack. I bought a home in a golf course community in Redmond, WA, though I don't golf. I have two dogs; one is part Scotty, the other a Lhasa Apso. Shawn has his own graphic design business in Chicago where he lives with his wife Lisa and my two grandsons, Finn and Cormac, and their dog Santos. Julie is a floral designer and she and her husband Mike have a home in Sudden Valley, about 80 miles away. They have two cats. Several years ago, while undergoing radiation for breast cancer, I took up knitting again, a skill I learned while in college. I have an online shop called Let It Rain on Etsy and I love it! As you might imagine, I particularly enjoy writing the descriptions of the items since writing has always been my passion. I am in good health, the BC gone completely. I see my daughter frequently and my son and family at least once a year. I keep busy knitting and hunting through thrift stores for items to put in the vintage section of my Etsy shop. I have lots of friends and would love to hear from some of my high school classmates.
